Placing an order before Feb production halt
Trying to figure out how late I could place an order for a MY2017 M3...sort of a strange situation in that I'm moving cross country mid April and hoping to not have the car arrive there before I've made the move...the move is to the West coast so I'm hoping it actually takes 90 days to get made(basically the reverse situation of most folks here )
I've talked to a local dealership with allocations but haven't been able to figure out the last date I could get the orders in as I get hit with the standard pressure tactics of "just order today these allocations might not last" etc Also, does anyone know about the timeline for picking up your car after it arrived at a dealership? Say it did arrive a couple weeks early, is it only important that I pick it up by the end of that arrival month in order to get locked in to rates that I placed the order with? Thanks |

If you know a dealer with allocation you should probably jump on it. Others want to order as well..and a dealer without allocation will not get allocation until MY18.

You basically need to pull the trigger now if you have a dealer with allocation.
Regarding pick up and finalizing the transaction, I would assume that the dealer would have an issue with a car sitting on their lot for an extended period of time that they haven't been paid for. For a number of reasons. To specifically answer your question, locked rates are based on calendar days from date of lock. Available programming tends to run until the end of the month. Bear in mind that rate locks differ in duration depending on your geographic location. You really need to discuss the mechanics of the entire scenario with the dealer directly. |

Yep, you are facing 2 deadlines. End of production and rate lock. You'll have to figure out how much you care about the rate lock.
If you don't buy now, there will be a lot of demand at the end of the year when production starts again. High prices, potentially higher interest rates and more competition. You could order from a west coast dealer (I can recommend mine) and plan to take delivery in mid April. If you lock now you will be OK until end of April. Also, the dealer does have some control of when a car goes into production, so they may be able to delay until Feb. Chances are it wouldn't go into production before then anyway. Another thing you could do is find a dealer that will let you purchase in April, but not pick it up until you are ready. If you sign the paperwork and start paying, I don't see why they wouldn't keep it on the lot for you for a few weeks. The big concern in my mind is people driving it. Quote:

This production halt... when does it officially start? my dealer just sent me an email yesterday asking for my order since BMW just brought back the pull-ahead program. I responded within the hour. Is it still possible to pick it up before the halt?

I should know today whether my CA can get me an allocation before end of production. I'm on the edge of my seat!

I was able to get my order in today. The dealership had an existing allocation waiting to be built in January, but I wanted full leather so that pushed it back to a Feb production date. Super excited. March can't come soon enough!

Put my order in yesterday, thanks for all the advice everybody
Ended up being 1500 above invoice which I am happy with, I had been in contact with about 12+ dealers and most had the policy of "no lower than MSRP for ordered vehicles". My dealer told me that they will expect this car to arrive mid April and that my planned pickup date of April 30 would not be a problem Pretty excited! |

Awesome. You probably want to lock in January rates. The dealer must send to BMW Finance to lock. You can call BMW Finance to verify.
