Cheers.
the difference is in the average power over all RPMS, even at high rpms.

look at the dyno plots and you will see why.

the s55 makes much more average power over the powerband than the s65.

Sorry buddy, I do track a fair amount (15-20 days/year) and haven't gotten "spanked" by a single 335... and no, no fanboy here . And not being a fanboy allows me to be critical about the F8X and especially the S55 .

If you read a bit more across these forum pages, most of us are concerned more about how the engine will "feel" in terms of power delivery. The vast majority of turbocharged engines have a falling torque curve as the revs increase, giving the impression the engine runs out of steam. Further, throttle response is another big item for me to be able to precisely position the car at the track (much less of an issue on the street). I experienced this different feel when I test drove one of my buddies 1M at the track. Sound is another point, but to a much lesser degree; and as I stated in my previous post, I very much enjoyed the sound of my S54 I6, so I don't mind the switch back to an I6. It's the turbo I am less sure about.

With all that said, I will still reserve final judgment to when I test drive the car.

Well then you don't fall in that gategory of track guys and that is fine. I am talking about the m3 owners that brag about how the m3 at least is trackable and far superior to a tuned 335 and they have never been on a track on their life time. I have driven the m3 and i was not impressed one bit and felt slow but handling and sound was fantastic. Let's wait and see how this new engine will be and I am sure once there are tunes out there it will be a beast of a car.

Are you talking about the E46 S54 engine? Let's look at the torque curves, shall we?

S54:

S65:

The S65 is much flatter and wider, not to mention wider. That, to me, means more "average torque". But, and I know others will back me up, torque at the engine means nothing. It's torque at the wheels. If you don't get that acceleration punch with your E9x M3 I think you're not driving it the right way to maximize acceleration.

Edit: The S54 is engine torque, the S65 is wheel torque. Ignore actual magnitudes -- the S65 is higher. I want you to notice the shape of the curves.

Cheers.

I was dead on. Roughly $90k with CCB.

Well this is AWESOME news for aftermarket tunes. . . if the turbos can compensate for altitude that means they can crank out more boost at sea level too

One of the features that hasent been talked about much that I am excited about is how the engine increases boost to compensate for high altitude. Having an S65 is great and the sound is heaven but the power loss sucks balls here in Denver at a mile high.
Yes, you will get the full power at your altitude at the expense of perhaps a little more lag.
