HPDE Insurance for Mont Tremblant
I've registered for the Boston BMW CCA event at Circuit de Mont Tremblant in the late part of July. For my other events I've always been able to get insurance through Lockton but there doesn't seem to be any coverage for this event. Has anyone bought HPDE insurance for Tremblant, and if so where? Thanks in advance.

In the past, if Locton doesn't have an event listed, I just called locton and they just added it. They are pretty responsive with those requests.

You can also use RLI - just enter the event you want to cover, it doesn't have to be in their drop downs. They also cover time trials.

Heard back from Lockton, no coverage possible for a single event for Mont Tremblant, would have to get a multi event. Going to message RLI, Hagerty, and ontrackinsurance. If anyone knows of any other options that'd be great.

Just get the multi-event? It will force you to head to the track and ensure you use the insurance :-) I think 6 events is pretty standard and it's good for one full year...so you could catch next spring w/the same policy.

Personally I don't insure against myself driving recklessly, but rather the stuff I definitely can't control such as an oil/coolant spill, mechanical failure, someone spinning/hitting me etc. Just this past weekend someone totaled an e92 due to mechanical failure of the wheel bolt, no issue with their driving. Tracking is a luxury not a necessity so I'd rather do 10 track days with insurance than 15 without and decrease my max downside by 90%. As as sidenote, the event insurance is the same whether you do a 1, 2, or 3 day event so I find it more economical to do the multi days in general.

The way I look at track insurance is that while I can control my own driving behavior, I can't control other people driving like reckless idiots nor can I predict mechanical failure. Better safe than sorry, imo. Yes, it drives the cost of a track day up, but saves you heartache in worrying.

Totally agree w/the sentiment around getting HPDE insurance. All it takes is one mistake, one error by another driver, one coolant spill, etc. Is it worth risking your car and having to pay for the entire thing (car repair/totaled, track repair, EMT costs, other damage...all which the insurance covers)? Not in my opinion.
A few years ago, driving my shiny new E90 M3, a Porsche turbo lost a coolant tank and sprayed coolant all over the track. I was 1/4 lap behind him and they didn't have the debris flag out yet. The car snap-oversteered and I almost caught it - but didn't. Luckily, there was run-off and I sustained no damage. I got my HPDE policy the next event and have never thought twice about it since. |

Don't forget that you are still paying for your regular car insurance, which will cover your participation in non-timed, non-competitive events (like HPDE's) in all states, except for MA (IIRC). If you have reservations as to whether or not your state/car insurance will cover HPDEs, read your policy, or call your insurance provider to validate. If your insurance company doesn't cover HPDEs, shop around! Quote:
I'm yet to witness a body-to-body contact between DE participants at any of the above events. I've seen instructors and solo students go off track many a time, occasionally coming in contact with immovable objects, but students in novice/intermediate run groups are usually well controlled by their instructors. My sample size stretches back 20+ years. I'm sure there are exceptions to this rule, and someone, somewhere, had once come in contact with another car at some BMW CCA DE over the past 20 years. Just none that I attended. Overall, you are WAY safer driving on track during a well managed DE than your are on an average highway! However, the "track day" or "test and tune" free-for-all events do tend to bring out the loose nuts. I've learned to avoid them altogether! a

Get the multi event coverage to save $$$$. I did that for a few years when I was doing around 15 to 20 weekends per year.
I've known too many folks who've trashed really high end cars. If you can't afford to just write it off ( and may actually can ), you probably should insure it or don't run on the track. I would say if you drive well you probably have about a 1 in 40 chance of some sort of on track incident. ( your fault or not ) It is all just a gamble...... I've got over 150 incident free weekends on the HPDE side of the game. But I still buy the insurance. Really it is a minor cost of a track weekend. |

Mind me asking what insurance you use? Mine doesn't cover HPDEs and the few I checked don't either. Would love to switch to one that does. Thanks!
