I got my DCT replaced at 25k miles under warranty. I had a clicking sound when shifting from 3rd to 4th. I was told it was easier to just replace the whole transmission since it was under warranty than trying to chase a sound for months. I shrugged my shoulders and told them to replace it....not like I am paying for it.

Sound went away and i got a new transmission out of it. Have not had a problem since. I know its not an engine.....but they could chase ghosts for the a while when trying to find what is causing the noise. Mechanical things can break. I would say most don't as we don't see many "they want to replace my engine" threads. Take the new motor. If they cannot get the car running normal after the replacement, then you may have a case for a "buyback"....

There is a third option: do nothing and wait for the engine to blow.

I would not wait until 2,400 miles before changing the motor oil.

Bring it to the dealer or do it yourself, either way just get it done.

Thanks for the response. I'll definitely go in at 1,200 miles.

The information displayed is based on the information sources that carfax purchases and what information is reported. If you looked at the VIN report on my wife's past 2012 X5 then you will not see any of the information which is displayed on your report.

Carfax only displays what information which is reported. Autocheck displays different information since Experian had different data sources. So if you use carfax and autocheck, you can still purchase a car which has been in an accident or had issues. It just reduces the chances major accidents.

(Ps, I architected and lead the developed team of Experian Autocheck system so I have a little bit of knowledge on this topic)

I suppose one way to check if a particular dealer's maintenance records get reported is to pull up the CARFAX on a few of the cars they have for sale on their lot to see if anything shows up. Chances are they serviced at least a few of those cars for the previous owners.

New engine is great. I'd prefer a new engine at 49,999 miles but whatever.

In regards to "it's never installed the same as the factory"....that's only kinda true. It's not like on modern engines there is some excess of parts. Yes, you may lose a grommet or an o-ring. If it's important, it'll show up soon under warranty. If it's not important, no big deal. It's not like the same risks don't apply to normal servicing over the life of the car.

They have to warranty an oil service after 1200 Miles. I work at a dealer and have done 1200 mile services after an engine or rear diff replacement on an M car.. The dealer needs to contact bmw warranty about this, there would be no reason for you to have to pay for it. The dealer can also contact the technical field rep. Bmw will not allow CPO coverage or extended service contracts if the oil change was 1200 Miles over due on a new engine.

Thanks for the info. I'll definitely reach out to BMW NA about this especially when the advisor told me they wouldn't cover it.

Yup I think I hit a dear at 8k or 12k I can't remember... The M4 wasn't one of my more memorable cars.... But it was then perfectly fine when I sold it with 30k miles to a dealership.

This. My last M4 had a new engine at 12K miles and the RIS on the engine was at no cost to me.

FWIW I can't say I was overly concerned that the car had had a new engine. Slightly inconvenient maybe with the back and forth with loan cars but when I traded it in on my current M4 no mention was made of the new engine.

I can’t believe they won’t cover the 1200 mile service.

How on earth are they going to tell a customer that had a bad engine that the maintenance on the new engine starting from the 1200 miles service is not covered. On what planet would a service advisor tell a customer to not do the 1200 mile service which could lead to engine replacement not being covered because the customer did not follow the maintenance schedule.Imagine if the new engine went bad and they said “sir I believe your ignoring the 1200 mile service at the advice of your service advisor has led to a mechanical failure of your engine and as per your warranty your not covered .”

Under no circumstances would I not do the 1200 mile service even if I had to pay for it as that could be used against you at any point in time in the future.
