Dealership says I need a new engine under warranty - what do I do?

Hi - I recently took my 2017 M3 to the service center for a ticking sound from the left side of the engine (passenger side). It usually happens during a cold start but eventually goes away when the car warms up. I was told by my SA that BMW of New Jersey wanted them to run more tests and asked them to pull out the DME. After a few days I was told that a new engine may be needed but a field engineer would need to come view the problem. I was told yesterday that in fact a new engine would be needed. What do I do? I reached out to BMW of North America to express my concerns and I’m not really sure what they are going to do. My car is 1 year old and has 15 k miles. Feedback is greatly appreciated.

Is this car financed/owned or leased?
Years ago, BMW replaced my engine due to a warranty issue, and apparently it happens more than you think.

The only question is if the car is leased or owned/financed. If it’s leases who cares. But if it’s owned/financed then I wouldn’t be happy because it will definitely hurt the resale value. I know if I was shopping for a used m3 and saw that the the engine was replaced it would give me pause. Unfortunately either way there’s not much you can do. Maybe ask for a new car but I wouldn’t hold out much hope

If you keep the records for when the prospective future buyer asks about it then it’s pretty easily explained as to not having been the result of misuse.

I don't understand what the concern is. There is an issue with your car and bmw is fixing it, what exactly is the problem?

I dont care how good the tech is or how carefull, shit will def get broken or bent in some way or the other when they take out an engine.
Suppose you will never know but ye grommets plugs wiring harness, pipes etc etc never go in the same way the came out from factory..
that is the reality but ye you have no choice or live with noise until it fails or gets worse.

You only have two choices...take the engine that’s covered under warranty or don’t take it and fix it on your own dime. Not sure what advice you’re looking for.

He's complaining because he doesn't want his car to be tampered with in the sense of not having the original engine in there because it would hurt value and once that's done it's never the "same" per se

I would be ecstatic if they went so above and beyond to get tests done and swapping the engine at their dime. OP is being a little of a snob IMO lol

I believe that this is way overboard on the pessimistic side. A new engine with 15k less miles than the car is far better than what he has and BMW is footing the bill. It's all good.

If BMW offered me a new engine after a year, I would be disappointed with the reliability, but grateful that they're willing to give me a new engine to make it right. After that, I'd just keep driving it.

Did anyone tell you exactly what they thought was wrong?

Grateful? Really? A $70k car and the engine is caput after 15k miles and you’re grateful they’re replacing it? Lol come on man. It’s the least they can do. Like I said if you own or finance the car I would at least ask and see if they’d be willing to get you into a new car. But most likely they won’t. But I’m sure any one of us would be wary of buying a used car that had an engine replaced. Like was stated
above, you never know what’ll happen during engine replacement.

Why are so many convinced that this suddenly becomes public knowledge having the engine replaced? "If you own/Finance the car I would be concerned" ... are you required to place a bumper sticker on the car warning everyone that it's not the original engine? How would anyone know?

A prospective buyer may be able to obtain the repair history from a dealer. I

The OP is in a bad place right now. Dump the car asap.

I thought only insurance claims were reported.

I'm grateful they're not accusing me of abusing it, taking it to redline too often, violating the break-in criteria, etc. Seen it too many times on the Porsche forums many years ago.
