If you refer to the phone app BMW M Laptimer you do not need connected drive. You need the phone app and the dongle.

You don't even need the dongle. Just cable and smartphone.

No dongle needed. Mine works with just the cable and iPhone app. In fact, it turns on automatically when I start the vehicle/have it plugged in.
