The M3 has been an iconic car for the past few decades and is the benchmark performance car in which all cars must match up against. I would want this heritage, this M3 badge, on the back of my car. Symbolizing the fact that it is a car to be revered. You can be a fan of the performance and the name; there's nothing saying you have to pick one.

If I do get an M4, I'll likely de-badge instead of re-badging it. To each his own I say. It's your car, if you feel like running around with an M3 badge on an M4 - by all means. It'll stir up confusion amongst people looking at it but who cares! It's your car, do what you feel is right

If I see an m3 badge on this car...... That's like the most idiotic thing to do. Be a badge whore or whatever u want to be. BMW authorized its name... Who do you think you are to call it anything else? Of anything, just debadge it.... But even then why would u debadge an M?

As someone that has owned M3's in the past, I do get it.
The 4 and 6 series are coupes with a "Grand Coupe" version.
The 3 and 5 series are now strictly salon or 4 do cars.

There has been rumors for years about BMW moving the model designations to odd numbers being sedan and even numbers being coupes.

Whatever. I care about how the car performs.
My E30 M3 was probably the purest M3. It was light, hand built and drove like it was on rails. The E36 for America was not a real M, and yes I owned one. It wasn't a real M because only the suspension and brakes were different from the regular E36. The engine was too much like a 328i. The E46 went back to a really different car than the regular E46 and the E9x was an even greater departure.

I want to see what the overall car is like. My 335i is a better car than my E36 M3. It's just as good a car as an E46 M3. The E30 much like the E9x are in a league of their own. I say 335i is better than the E36 and ties the E46 because it delivers more power, brakes better and does it all with a broad power. You have to work to get an E36 M3 to perform because the engine has nothing down low. The E46 delivers more peak power than the 335i but if you look at the curves the 335i delivers more for longer.

Not trying to hijack the thread but I hope the new M3 and M4 are more unique like the E30 and E9x cars and less like the E36 M3 was to a 328i.

With all that being said.
I have a daughter due for college in 3.5 years so none of these are on my shopping list unless I win the lottery...

The name doesn't bother me. It's more about the car and owning and driving it. The M3 name will live on, yes it will be a 4 door version but at least you will get a choice if you are chasing a name! There is always the no cost option of having it debased! It could be worse, I know someone who bought a 116d m, got rid of the 116d and has plastered the front grill and rear with M badges! It's a brand, the marketing people are clever in exploiting the M to widen the audience. They are there to make money & profit, it's not a charity. If the outcome is to produce exciting, new models - go for it!

Let's suppose they give you the 3 cars but you can't look inside the hood, and the BMW is faster and handles better.

Would you pick any of the other 2 just cause they have a V8?
I think it's more of, BMW will even kick their butt with 2 cylinders less and saving fuel in the process with also a lighter car

That's my feeling

..well said, ...drive it... V8, I6, B4... its the drive not bragging rites

The M4 if you look at it from BMW M's perspective is the opportunity to create a new iconic M car just as BMW will reflect the whole image of the 4er with a more exclusive sportier looking and driving car than before.

The M4 will be as different to the F80 as the F30 to the F32. Both cars will be tuned differently although sharing the same components , drivetrain and engine. The M4 will reflect the more dynamic side of the M family.
Do not think that BMW M do not know what has to be done here they know exactly where the current M3 is in status and that is stills at the top of its game where it has been since 2007.

And keeping that status even with added progression is the upmost priority for M's engineers.

The advent of the Avant only Audi RS 4 has got the water coolers in the FIZ buzzing and although nothing has appeared officially , there is much discussion regarding rumours about a possible M3 Touring finally becoming a reality since each generation has got close and closer yet to the green light only to evaporate at the end. Both Audi and Mercedes-Benz offer successful high performance wagons in that segment but BMW do not.

Much discussion about the renaming etc , on the Design night some journalists could not believe that BMW went through with it.

I suppose it would be fun walking down a street and seeing a new M4 or 4er with a 3er badge. So I can turn around to my wife and say "what a backwards person?"
I should mention that the rehetoric surrounding the 4er and M4 has been heard by everyone in BMW not only in the present but throughout each generation of cars. When the truth of the matter is for some its specifically status- the newest of the new. You will be in the next one. Does not matter if it is an M4 or a 440i.
