Indeed, there will now be a premium pricing for M4 vs M3. Audi-esque.

Think I will de-camp to P-cars.

I understand the point but I beg to differ: the 1st M3 was 2-doors. So in my book it's like Porsche making the 911 a Panamera. Which clearly they did not do. Spo the raison d'être of the Panamera was to avoid diluting the 911's heritage.

Of course there will be a heap of 'punters' who won't care a damn for the nomenclature. But in 1 gen the M3 will go to M4 and turbo. I embrace change but I believe this move to be wrong-headed. Keep the badge, we understand the need to go turbo to meet power and fuel economy requirements.

But I'm sure the M4 will sell well whatever I or other traditionalists think

An M3 touring would be amazing. I hope BMW finally goes through with it.

+1

I thought I'd never consider a squashed beetle but the 991 generation is looking damn good in every respect and I might have to overlook the F82 M4 and start saving up for a 991 GT3. The only thing that has ever concerned me is the engine and if they could somehow engineer the upcoming S55 to be 99.99% as good as their legendary normally aspirated forebearers, I'll be sold. Time will only tell when the F80 M3 comes in.

In other news, Chevrolet, in celebration of their famous coupe's 7th generation, will be renaming it the Corbette.

People are always opposed to change. As long as it performs like a M car is supposed, then I'm happy. If someone doesn't know what an M4 is when you say it, then that person is not an enthusiast anyway. Know your history.

Dumb badge fans. I can't even imagine what would happen if Porsche called it icon "912"? Owners would debadge and put 911 decales on the whole car?

Those of you thinking the name is so important and are going to rebadge your cars are what give the term "badge snob" its meaning. Yes, there is heritage, but really only the enthusiasts will know about that. The general public could probably care less about the heritage, or on which specific model of BMW you drive that you desperately want to display with a badge.

My thoughts exactly. It wouldn't surprise me if the car ends up only badged with an "///M" emblem on it like that of the 1M Coupe.

No, there will still be the M3 sedan.

Well, there was a 912 previously which was a 4 cylinder version of the 911. I wonder what people thought of that back in the day.

I think the underlying theme here is that it's just a curious matter. Not in the sense of a conspiracy theory but just an "oh really? That's...interesting..." type way. The car is going to be great, I'm sure, but this definitely raises some eyebrows. I thought the special name for their special coupe was going to be the same forever and I might even assume that most folks didn't have a problem with that. In any event, it's their company and they get to define their direction. They seem to have a knack for producing special cars so I don't worry in that regard.
