Yeah you just said it though, I am an enthusiast and the heritage and history behind that name is important to me. It's personal opinion.

And again your right, the general public wont care, which is sad that BMW is more interested in marketing and its sales numbers then still keeping in touch with its roots and those die hard fans who follow them no matter what.

Either way I'm sure it will be a cracking car, just a shame about the name.

In accordance with BMW's new model layout, I believe it would. 3=sedan. 4=coupe. 5=sedan. 6=coupe.

Pretty clear to me.

It was crazy when they renamed the coupe version of the M5 the 'M6' after it had already been around for thirty years.

I understand it from a branding standpoint, but I do not have to agree with it. Regardless, I am saying what I would do to my personal car and it would not require the consent of the forum.

I respect that. To each their own. Just saying I don't agree.

Enjoy your BMW.

That is your opinion. I know all to well the M3 legacy, having just got out of a 2011 E92 M3, and having owned an e36 M3 as well. I don't give a crap if other people are too naive to not know about the new M4. It simply means that they are either posers or noobs that don't know BMWs.

How is adding numbers overkill? Go ahead and debadge all you want...I wont loose a minutes sleep over it. I just simply think that is retarded to re-badge any model car to a model that it is not....at least according to the MANUFACTURER of the car.

All those that know the M3 will know what the M4 is. All those that won't know what the M4 is, neither will know what an M3 is or was. For them it will just be a "BMW". Most funny thing is that in the mind of many "M4" already exists.

"What car was that? Z4, M3? M4???" Wether you talk to girls or even guys. They often confuse M3 and Z4 and call them M4.

LOL

Actually, yes, it would be. It's placing a different badge on a car and saying it's something that it's not. Why is that so hard for you to understand. It's really simple.
I guess simple things are complicated for some

I somewhat disagree. The M3 was the car that made MANY of today's BMW fans, BMW fans. It’s an historic centerpiece in the history of one of the greatest car companies in the world, even more so than the "M1" badge.

In our present times of questioning BMW's prime focus in performance automobile design, I think it is a welcomed move to attempt a personal, physiological preservation of the roots of the company’s Motorsport division.

If anything, it should be celebrated that BMW fans want to keep the name reference. It keeps the sauce authentic, whereas most people will go and buy and "M4" with no idea or care of what the car means to automotive history and the continuous progression of BMW as a company.

Right. It's not about being a "badge snob". I enjoy reading history. I have books about BMW etc - where the M3 (2-door) is an iconic car, this name change marks a break in that line of heritage.

And it's plain cynical: bean counters & marketing types > heritage

Yes, funny how there's no 912 anymore. So the more recent adds down in the range from the iconic 911 that are are named (ie Boxter, Cayman) - and the 911 goes on & on unsullied as the 911 (they would never, say, make the mistake now of making a '922').

Flip this on its head and maybe over time the punters will think of the M3 as a lower-rent M4 <ugh>

Agreed. Genuinely, if someone is going to badge their F platform Sedan as an M3, there is some serious Childishness in whomever being will do so.

I have owned M3's since I ordered my 1st in 2001, which was Laguna Seca Blue & happily came de-limited with all German OEM Equipment to the U.S.
No one here is smarter than BMW to feel they are more wise to go messing with the car name in any fashion. May as well even have the open mindedness to badge it as an M6 or 1M as well, or since it is a Sedan, M5 or M6 Gran Coupé.
Complete nonsense.
