Going old school. The extra gear is nice, but $2,900 +88 lbs. and less engagement is not appealing. I'm sure the DCT is great for many, but have absolutely no desire to try it. Now, if my left knee keeps getting worse, you may see a change of direction here!

My 2¢ on the DCT or MT6. I love MT work. My E39 M5 has a CNS Racing clutch in it and I love the on/off action of it. I have an E60 SSK also and love it.
I test drove a 6MT E60 M5 and hated it. The clutch was soft and the shifting was smooth. The smoothness of the shifting was so disengaging, I hated it. I'm sure I was just used to the E39 6MT. My worries is that the F82 clutch/tranny combo will be disengaging also, hence why I went with the DCT. I'd rather not spend more money on aftermarket clutch/SSK additions. I want to save my $$$ for tune and exhaust. |

No review that I have seen has said that the DCT is as god as the Porsche PDK so this is not a best of breed transmission. That's one thing but the progress of technology has made some of the first and second generation manumatic transmissions look like crap. Look at the review of the CSL vs the M235i; by current standards the SMGII is terrible. The same thing will happen in a few years with the DCT. It will be like looking at the nav screen in a car from 2004. Take a look and remember how awesome the CSL was/is; now if it only had a manual

Manual vs. DCT
Good opinion piece on this subject, IMO.

That's one individual that understands the raison d'être of performance cars to those who think of speed as being of secondary importance to the driving experience.

I especially like the line "Do you want to ride to 60 in 3 seconds or drive there in 5?"

We have a 2010 Z4 35i that has been modified a bit. So, I have 35k miles of experience with the DCT in that car - it is awesome. I am assuming that this M3 DCT will be even better. It has been said many times before, auto when you want, MT when you want, and "faster."
That being said, I am probably going to sell our awesome e89 for a "stripper" M3 with the 6MT or use the $3k in savings and put it toward the badass brakes for $9k. I do not know what to say other than: 1) I miss the third pedal and precise engine braking control (although the DCT is not bad in this department), 2) even less weight makes me happy, 3) the acceleration difference matters none to me as if that were the determining factor, I would buy a different car - I will not chase a tenth of a second or two; and 4) I think it is getting to be old-school cool. Silly I know. My potential build: M3, 6MT, BS or MG, Sonoma, Harman-K, and MAYBE the BRAKES! but that is ridiculously expensive so I do not know. I will also do ED and the PCD if I order. I like MT. I haven't driven MT as much as auto and SMG in my 30 years of driving. I don't see SMG/DCT as an auto transmission, but some people might. I see DCT as the best of both worlds. With my E46 M3, I never drive it in auto mode (well SMG's auto mode does suck). I always shift with the paddles or the stick myself. It gives me the control of gear selection and allows me to concentrate my driving with the wheel. SMG is inferior to DCT. So I very much look forward to the amazing DCT in the F80.
The fact that F8x has both manual and DCT and that BMW invested to make the manual transmission light and better makes F8x a better choice to other companies' offering and more appealing to more customers. If you think the bitching and moaning about the new M cars has been bad, imagine if BMW didn't offer manual transmission like Audi or MB. We have it good.

I don't see anything on Getrag's website that can handle more than 509 Nm, so not sure. Anyone know the transmission model?

The transmission is the same one from the 1M with beefed up clutch/PP (supposedly).
The transmission in the 1M was the same one as from the 135i but with the clutch from the 335is (to handle the 369 lb/ft overboost function). That transmission is made by ZF and can comfortably handle alot of power (it's going to be clutch limited for awhile) |

The F8X gets a new clutch (double plate clutch) relaltive to the 1M, so the MT is fundamentally a development of the 135/335 MT (carbon friction lining in the synchros and auto rev match being the new features). Last edited by CanAutM3; 05-27-2014 at 10:19 AM.. |

This represents the same gearing as the 1M and a different final drive ratio (shorter on the f80) I know that doesn't contradict what you said, I just wanted to clarify. |

In the interest of sparking discussion, I note this nice little rant today on Jalopnik about how no car has 'both' automatic and manual no matter what you want to believe.
http://dougdemuro.jalopnik.com/no-yo...-an-1582149430 So there. (being an opinionated DB, I'd probably tend to agree with the author...(especially about Camaro owners)...even if the DCT is better....it isn't a manual. and, in my concession to nostalgia, MT all the way for me) |

I ordered my M4 with manual trans. Delivery should be in a couple weeks. I'll let u guys kno what I think once she gets here, but I'm pretty sure ima love it. I guess I'm jus a little old school when it comes to this. My buddy is getting his with the DCT, so I'll compare.
As far as the interior goes, I've ordered a custom carbon fiber/perforated leather BMW performance shifter and E-Brake lever, so I'll post pictures once I've installed them. I don't like either of the stock shifters. Jus me tho |

Chances of him reading the whole article are low. There's not a single button or paddle to press that does that.
