Helmet recommendations?
No experience in buying helmets other than bicycle helmets in that past . Can anyone recommend me a good helmet and shop in the SoCal area?

This should be all you need for a long time. You can find it cheaper from other sources but its a very good helmet.

Go check out Winding Road Racing in Fountain Valley. Full selection of helmets in all price ranges and lots of race gear too. I had never purchased a helmet before either and had a great experience there when buying my Stilo ST5.

OP, I second what the others are saying, about getting the helmet from a store and fitting it. You should plan to spend ~15-20 min per helmet and just sit there and make sure if feels ok.
I've used HJC helmets in the past and currently use ZAMP. I personally believe fit is most important but you'll get advice about buying the most expensive helmet ("because i have a $1000 head not a $100 head....") but unless someone shows tech that the $ helmet has better safety (an old MC helmet test article showed the cheapest helmet had same or better protection as $$$ helmets) then I think it becomes about fit more than anything |

I have the newer HJC AR10-III. Previously used my old Arai motorcycle helmets until they were no longer eligible. I really like the HJC because it fits good, feels like a quality piece, no fogging, and doesn't break the bank. I considered the other brands but settled with a well-known brand and have not been disappointed.
If possible, try on as many helmets as possible since they all fit slightly different. And if you're budget is high, go stilo |

That depends on whether you like you face or not, lol. If you don’t mind taking broken glass or other flying objects to the face in a crash by all means wear open face.
Obviously I am being a bit sarcastic there, but unless you are a YouTube personality that needs their face to be seen by the camera or maybe only doing fairly low speed autocross, I see no reason to wear an open face helmet. Go full face! |

I have the Shoei RF-SR and would recommend it. I use it mainly for my motorcycle. What ever helmet you do get, make sure you get the fog shield.
One thing to remember about helmets: Even the cheapest helmets with the DOT, SNELL ratings have good crash protection. They wouldn't have these ratings otherwise. You are pretty much paying for the comfort/features with the expensive helmets. |

Stilo ST5-F Carbon for me!
Very lightweight, but I was using it for racing If you are doing track days only don't worry so much about light weight but more on comfort. Lastly, try try try as many as you can! We can all recommend loads of helmets, but you will find all helmets are very individual and what is "right" for us may not be "right" for you. EM |

I just bought a HJC AR-10 III. I went to Northstar Motorsports (Barrington IL) with the intent of spending $600-&800. After trying on 5-6 helmets, the HJC was the most comfortable. They have been fitting helmets for 20 years and was very confident and happy with my choice.

I'm a big fan of my Simpson Carbon Devil Ray. It's very lightweight and comfortable. As others have said, you MUST try on some helmets before you make a final decision, you will be surprised how different they fit.
(P.S. you can remove the ugly Simpson stickers) |
