Another chiming in about the sound - better than I would have expected. Fingers crossed it is all natural. C&D had it wrong, this does not sound like a 335 at all.

Impressive numbers, and I'm sure it's a quick car. I just think this new line of M cars has lost it's soul. I'm glad I pulled the trigger and got a 2013 instead of waiting for this. This is the first time in forever a new m3 isn't something I desire.

Same here. The artificial sound might fit with the M5/M6, where a more "refined" experience is expected, but I'd rather have pure sound in such an iconic car. The M5/M6 artificial sound receives a lot of hate from people both inside and outside the BMW community.

I'd hate to buy one and have my fellow car-nut friends break my balls over the fake engine noise coming from my speakers

Jason: thanks so much for all this info, it's fantastic. I have an incredibly minor question: will the production version have red tach needles? The all-white looks odd.

Re the sound, it sounds tremendous and I'm a current E92 owner. I'm pretty sure C&D have it wrong as per usual, but looking forward to confirmation. If BMWs claims are true, it's yet another time the early complainers were proved wrong as this is nothing like a 335.

Its obvious he's shifting around 5-6k as he leisurely drives around the course, but on that one shot it looks as if his tach just touches 8k or surpasses it but just a tad.

Will there be a shift light on the M3/4?

Not anywhere near 8k.

Please, give it a rest. You've never driven it so how can you have ANY frame of reference? If you like your 2013 great, it's a VERY nice car, but silly quotes like the above make you look like someone with buyer's remorse.

that thing sounds amazing. my faith in BMW is starting to be restored.

however, as far as the automatic "blipping" on the 6mt, what does that mean for us drivers who like to heel-toe and manually rev match when downshifting quickly?

I have auto rev matching on my 991 and I love it. Great to see the M4 is getting that feature too.

Sounds like it is not active in normal mode, hopefully that is true. Could also likely be coded out.

Agree. First thing he addresses in the video is electric steering and turbos.

Hmmm...you think BMW maybe told him to address those two very important changes while showing the car off.

Also electric steering...yes he says it is precise, but how does it feel. That is the problem with almost all electronic steering systems. They feel numb. Feedback from road is not felt through the wheel and if it is, it feels artificial.

There sounds to me to be some considerable turbo lag at the 1:06 mark right after all of the discussion about the lack of lag. Either he did not fully nail the throttle and thus the engine is just gaining rpms slowly or there is lag.

Steering continues to sound solid.

Nice non committal answer about DCT vs. MT... Both are great, of course.

I have to say I am mildly amused by BMWs choice for auto rev matching with the MT. I guess because this intrusion of "unnecessary" technology into the MT "purists" realm is and will piss them off...

The sound sounds terrible to me, especially noted in the additional video just above. I guess to each their own... However, sound must be experienced in person, inside and outside the car, windows up and windows down, low engine load and high load, low rpm and high

Fully agreed. An odd decision, unless it can be turned off.

Cool video, thx.

Looking at the tach in this video (2-15 secs into the recording), the exhaust/ engine note seem to be in sync, so maybe there's no active sound involved as Jason stated-- only time will tell. Nice engine/ exhaust note.

Comments like this are so funny. "I just bought the old model and I need to convince everyone that I did a good decision. I'll try to convince everybody that the new model has "lost it's soul" and hope everyone agrees".

Care to explain what it is, in your opinion, that leads to the new M3/M4 having "lost it's soul"?

Is it the CFRP components?
Is it the low weight
Is it the looks?
Is it the straight six engine?
Is it the handling/steering (which we have no base to judge apart from what we saw in the videos)?
Is it the turbos?

It is only on in sport and sport plus modes, which basically means it is always on. I have no doubt a custom software solution will be available to override it but that will take quite some time.

Have you seen Chris Harris' test of the new 991 Porsche GT3 before making this observation?

There is hope for EPS yet...

"M3 and M4 developed with help of BMW race car drivers Bruno Spengler and Timo Glock's participation in extensive testing and set- up runs on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit, focusing on assessment of the cars’ suspension, tyres and all elements of the powertrain."

So Ya, he wont say anything negative. But why would he, the car seems to be badass... I am looking forward to it! Cant wait for a test drive...

...and now look at em' complaining about the next generation.

And you have to admit, the below exerpt is pretty funny... especially since his prediction at the end was pretty damn accurate!

From 2008: Unbiased Road Review http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=222065

Just thought I would share my experience of test driving four different BMW's in one day...

(Comparison of Z4M coupe, roadster, and 135i)

4.)2008 E92 M3: I am sad to say I was significantly dissapointed with the new M3. I tried to be open with it, but it just doesn't strike the proper chords with what I think a M3 should be, that coupled with bangle influence and a much larger appearance (GT realm) I left with a frown : (

First off, aside from gaining significant weight, I give BMW props for making it feel and handle like it is much lighter than the hefty 3704lbs curb weight. I was very impressed with the light feel, I was expecting it too feel heavier and sluggish, but it was the opposite. Steering was numb, brakes were strong, but not on par with ZCP brakes, maybe cause they were new? Finally the power...well the power just wasn't there. I couldn't get over the lack of torque, and it only felt slightly quicker than my e46!! This car did NOT feel like 414 BHP, the 135i pushed me deeper in my seat (I know the 135i has 5 more ft/lbs of torque, but come on it's a freaking 414 BHP M3!!!!) What gives. I touched beyond 8k with the pedal stuffed ?

I made sure the DCS was off and the power button was activated. The sales guy said he was certain it was setup for full power. I asked if maybe they dumbed it down for the 1200 mile break in period. He reluctantly came back and informed after talking with a tech that yes, they do de-tune them for break-in purposes, about 100hp ?? Can anyone verify this? If thats the case that explains it.

Long story short, the car just feels numb and sounds all wrong, I cannot get used to the V8 rumble. No soul in this M3 IMHO. BMW needs to bring back the heritage of the straight six and throw on some turbos to compete in the HP wars, either that or stay N/A and get some tips from Lotus and lose a lot of baby fat. Just my .02
