I had two e90 6mt's before and corner balanced them both on the same set of scales w/ approx 3 gallons of gas like the f80 measured for this post...my '08 e90 6mt w/ sunroof, folding rear seats, hk sound, akra evo full, 19x9.5 Advan RS square w/ 275/30 19 pss tires, stock brakes was 3615 and my '11 e90 6mt comp package, no sunroof, no folding rear seat, hd not hk sound, same exhaust, same wheels, brembo 365/345 bbl was 3450...I was shocked how much the folding rear seats and hk sound added to the car the '08 had way more sound deadening could really feel in the doors but it was quieter...pretty sure the akra exhaust and advan wheels were about 100lbs off stock e90 so you do the math...just traded in the '11 on a super heavy f80 m3 w/ dct, sunroof, hk sound, steel brakes, etc...heavy as they come...it's my DD and I have other track cars so I went for the luxury but if i was going to race this car against the clock at anything i would go for lighter options i just wanted luxury...seems to me like an f8x w/ dct is similar in weight to e9x w/ 6mt not the 175 lbs bmw suggests? will weigh the new f80 m3 heavy model asap should be about 3700?

But most truck scales are tightly regulated by the state. Weight and Measures test them every 6 months. They can only be OFF +/- 10lbs. Yes....10lbs. Ask me how i know, i drive/work near a truck scale in South NJ Voorhees RT561. A few weeks ago i saw the company(advance scales) re-calibrating the scale. I spoke with the lady that runs it and told me the scale was off by 12lbs. This is a scale that measures 100,000lbs it can only be off by 10lbs. It had to be shut down for the day. On another note, I have weight my cars on this scale for many years. The above measures were with FULL tank of gas

So if Joe from PA's "stripper" F80 is 3450 lbs - how the H_ll did BMW get 3300 lbs??
Ok - I don't like think of myself as a conspiracy theorist - nor am I one to doubt automakers just for the sake of doubting them.
But.............................. Joe from PA's "stripper" F80 M3 (only option EDC) was 3450 lbs on what appears to be a very accurate scale. Assuming the scale is in fact very accurate (which I have no reason to doubt), and given that all factors being equal, an F80 is supposed to be 50 lbs more than an identically equipped F82 (which would make it 3400 lbs) - how in the heck did BMW calculate 3300 lbs for a no-option Euro spec F82 (which would be 100 lbs lighter than an American spec F82 with zero options)? I'd love to hear the answer to this... |

Approx 110lb lighter than my E90 with same fuel load when it was stock, and my car only has premium and cold weather. That's damn impressive. DCT to DCT would be closer since the f80 6mt is so much lighter, but damn. My car now weighs about 3500 with 3 gallons in it, but it has a lighter exhaust, Stoptech front brakes and lighter wheels.

His car was low on fuel, so it really weighs 3530.

I believe that the weight that was quoted was for an f8x that was specced identically to a stripped e9x. Meaning no nav or any of the standard options that you can't buy your f8x without. So while the car may well have weighed 3300 lbs, you cant buy it in that state.

And let me just say this so I'm not misunderstood - I cannot wait to get my F80 M3 - I am totally excited!! I know that the way I spec'd mine out it is going to weigh 3,595 minimum (19" wheels, steel brakes, MDCT, CF roof, EDC, executive package, lighting package, HK sound, enhanced bluetooth)...
I also know that it is going to feel significantly lighter than my E93 M3 (3,595 vs. 4,140 lbs) So in no way do I think I'm going to be disappointed with my new 3,595 lb. car... I just want to understand (from a purely curious point of view) where that 3,300 lb figure came from (I think the post above is a very plausible theory...) |

Just to confirm this scale is a scrap yard scale. Meaning pick up trucks with 200 pounds of aluminum roll in.
The scales units were in 10 pound increments and it has a certified margin of error of 10 pounds or less. |

Don't laugh. I own a 2012 wrangler. The difference in the jeep with hardtop and doors off is amazing. Weight definitely is the enemy.
I don't have the M3 anymore. I just ordered an m-sport 535dxi. Wanted bigger and more comfortable. Going to add an M4 next year. I like to give them a year or two to iron out the kinks. |

In this years DTM Press Release, BMW said the following:
"The BMW M4 Coupé itself is a prime example of intelligent, lightweight construction. The high-performance sports car weighs just 1,497 kilograms when empty – that is a whole 80 kilograms less than its predecessor." I still believe the ~3,300lbs is dry weight. |
