Temporary Track Numbers

Was curious if anyone has good recommendations for temporary numbers for track days aside from painters tape.

Have seen the magnetic numbers from TrackDecals.com, has anyone used them at all?

Would love any insight or experience people have with different solutions. Thanks!

I use small (8" number) SCCA-compliant magnetic door plate from TrackDecals.

I also have a standard (10" number) NASA-compliant reusable vinyl door plate coming.

I've also used 8" vinyl numbers from Amazon on my rear side windows.

The magnet decals have a tendency to fly off at high speeds. Use the adhesive stickers. Alternatively, these windshield markers are fantastic as long as it doesn't rain. Perhaps a bit janky.

Have you had any issues with the magnetic door plate coming off?

Which vendor did you go with for the reusable?

The reusable vinyl door plates are also from TrackDecals. 10" reusable vinyl is the same cost as 8" magnets. I have the 10" vinyl plates but have not yet used them.

"small" 8" number door magnets.

I have found door plate magnets to be resiliant; no issues at Mid-Ohio, NCM, Gingerman, etc. with straightaway speeds of 140mph. I have lost one magnet in 2 seasons of using them, at Putnam Park earlier this year right at the braking zone into T1 about 135mph.

What I have found with door plate magnets is storing them unrolled/flat (I stick them on my garage fridge) then transporting them stuck together/flat mitigates the issue of unrolling magnets from the shipping tube and trying to get them to adhere with a "curl" in them.

A small piece of Track Armour tape on the front of the magnet would mitigate any risk of it departing the car.

I store mine on the steel interior garage door, but storing flat on a magnetic surface is ideal. When you get to the track if its a colder day, put them under your hood with it closed for a bit. The engine heat will warm them up so they are flexible enough to shape to your car well. Doesn't matter much if they cool once on the car. Its making sure you don't have any edges peeling up on the leading edge.

The guys I know that run magnetic numbers tape the leading edge, especially if they are not flat from storage.
I just put permanent numbers on and look like a doof driving around town when I take the car out. I now have the same car number for multiple clubs, save some change. When guys at work see my car with numbers on it, they ask “race track this weekend.”
I don’t think many of them knew I had an M4 and an M2, both Alpine White, they always seemed confuse.

I use these pretty inexpensive and they coke off easily off the rear window quarter glass… I just left the number on for the whole season and just removed them yesterday.
