No power increase on F80 M3?
Nothing terribly new but interesting confirmation on previous reports from a BMW M guy during a roundtable with respect to hp gain vs existing gen ("more powerful may not translate to more hp"). Good news that weight has been confirmed to be down.

The new FI M's will have plenty of power on the table, probably cheaply, with aftermarket tunes.
Whether or not they come out of the factory with more power, which they probably will, they will be monsters. |

If BMW marketing's intent is to confuse people then they are doing an excellent job, I am confused.
The video shows a regular 4 series, but then under the hood is an M badged engine. (not sure if this is a bullshit badge like you find everywhere else or if its a real M engine ) Also BMW is being very cryptic about the drivetrain in the new M3 (now called M4) at this point I think they would be in a position to announce a little bit more I just think the whole thing is lame..getting rid of the 3 series for a 4 series so they can up the price..and then ofcourse the predicted departure of the NA motor..and calling it an M4.. Count me among the traditionalists who cant stand what BMW is doing..just sealed it for me. I am keeping my e92 NA M3 for a long while to come. |

BMW is not getting rid of the M3, they are rebadging all coupes and convertibles as 4 series, or M4's. They also now can offer a 4 series, (M4), Gransport which is a design/aesthetic driven, less utilitarian 4 door "coupe", at an inflated price. |

M3 and M4 will disappoint. Doesnt really need to stand out anymore since BMW throws ///M badges on just about every model now. Every BMW is going to be an ///M car soon.

I thought it was confirmed with reasonable certainty somewhere that the next M3/M4 would be about 450 HP and E46 M3 weight?
A tune could really wake it up also but hopefully it will be able to handle the extra heat. I am sure it will be an amazing car but it won't have the things that I think make ///M cars special so I probably won't have one.

More powerful probably means a LOT more torque a LOT sooner. Probably will have a better power to weight ratio.
I also heard the M3 sedan won't be released until the M3 coupe is released in 2014.

They are headed in a different direction, like most manufacturers, in all cars they make. The M3 may disappoint if you are narrow-minded and have little appreciation for change (not suggesting you are). I think the next M3 will be a phenomenal car that will continue to reign supreme against it's competition. Different...yes, disappointing? I highly doubt it. |

Spot on. BMW marketing will kill the iconic M3 namesake.

I think all BMW engines are underrated.

Every thread seems to be a thread turning into a "bash the M4 badge name" thread, come on guys.
The lack of power increase has been speculated for a while, but it's still just that - speculation. I personally won't believe anything until BMW announces it. And so many people are worried about power, why? Turbo powered cars are so easy to tune and get power out of. I can't imagine it'll cost more than 4-5 grand to up the power to 500 bhp or so.

The E60 M5 was 507, the F10 is 550. The E9X M3 was 414, the new F8X is supposed to be 450. I think that's a decent increase.
I agree...BMW is kind of going overboard making the M3 AND M4 AND giving it a different chassis designation. Unfortunately, I think the BMW marketing department is too in love with Audi. Either way, I think the new M3 is going to be as brilliant a dual duty daily driver/track car as the M5 is an executive express.

the engine with the M badge was not a 4-series. look at the kidney grills, they were not connected to the headlights. looked they were showing the M6 engine, twin turbo v8.

Hell, tell me that 414hp on the track is inadequate. I would really like the next M3 to go back to E46 M3 power levels with a bit more torque and weigh around 3000lbs. That would be brilliant!

Less weight, sure. Even if the F80 shows up with 400HP/400lb-ft, I think it will be a real monster. |
