My DCT equipped car has stalled twice while parking

Picked up a 2016 F83 a few weeks ago and love it. Twice while hurriedly parking (once parallel, once in a Target parking lot) the car has somehow stalled while going between a forward gear and/or reverse or vice-versa.

I know how to drive the DCT well (had a 2009 M3 and a 2013 M3 with prior DCT) but ... this happen to anyone else? Car seems fine, no error lights, it just stalled. I restart all is well.

Thoughts?

Doesn't sound normal at all. The computer should manage engine speed and the clutch to the point that it doesn't stall. How many miles are on this car? I would take it to the dealer to see if they can find anything wrong with it.

Maybe it's the Start/Stop switch?

It's normal. It'll stall if you switch between reverse and drive and hit the gas too quick.

Clearly possible per other thread, but I haven't had it happen in my F83 or previous F82. Should be easily avoidable.

I think its normal. Happened to me twice too about 3-4 mths into ownership of new M4. Both cases were the same (parallel parking). I was backing up and stopped, I put the car in forward gear then quickly decided to "touch" back a bit more, quickly put car in reverse and blip the throttle to engage "creep" mode then stall. A friend asked the same question when it happened to his M4. Hasn't happened again in over 2 yrs.

Kudos to this board for the good insights -- sounds like exactly what I was doing (hurriedly moving, shifting quickly, blipping throttle... stall!)

My DCT E92's never did this, but good to know.

Keep in mind that the DCT is not an automatic. It's a manual transmission with a computer doing the shifting for you (when you are in auto mode). You have to give the computer a chance to engage reverse or drive before you hit the gas. Even if you don't stall after quickly shifting, you can feel the engine rev with no movement of the car because the DCT has not fully engaged yet. Lastly, this is most likely to happen when the DCT is cold. For example, upon a cold start in my car, I'll put it in reverse quickly and hit the gas and sometimes the car won't move at first. Then the DCT will engage the gear and start backing out of the garage.

its happened to me in my 18 ZCP F80 a few times, usually when im rushing. no codes are issues so never thought twice about it. seems to not be that uncommon, reading the thread.

My F82 DSC doesn't stall but it does seem as if the wheels are losing traction in reverse if I switch too quickly between drive and reverse gears

In general, there's definitely quite a long delay in engaging gears between drive and reverse and vice versa on the DSC - longer than I would expect but I'm beginning to learn to take more time!

It's your car's gag reflex to Target parking lots. Carry on.

Think about how funny I found it coming from a MT car and stalling the F80 DCT twice the first day I got the car.

I guess it's like what ASD is to real exhaust sound; not really necessary but a stalling DCT helps creates the ambiance of a manual..
