2018 iDrive Display vs. 2017

I drove my friend's 2018 M3 and his screen looked a lot nicer...different icons etc. I know 2018s are touch screens, but is the software different too? Thanks

2017 iDrive is ID5/ID6 Light, 2018 is ID6.

Because you have iDrive v5 and he has iDrive v6, it's not about the touch screen, it's the entire iDrive software is different fro 5 to 6 where v6 is tile based

you can get the iDrive 6 Lite not the actual iDrive 6 as that requires hardware upgrades.

See: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1396965

It can be simply coded. Just read that thread and see how to do it

I have an early-July 2017 build and my car does not have a touch screen (odd, since July was supposed to be SOP for the feature). I'm a techie and was disappointed, but I've got to tell you, it's no loss. The car was designed before a touch screen was a consideration and the screen placement is way too far away from the driver to make touch capabilities useful. I'm completely happy using the normal iDrive controller.

Everyone says that, but the only thing that's tile based is the main menu. It's very nice, but I don't have that screen displayed very often. Other than the main menu design, I don't believe there's any significant difference between the two iDrive versions. If anyone can, let us know whether there are other differences.

This. Also, the other menus are basically identical. Only change is main menu functionality. It's nice. But not Earth shattering.

Agreed, iDrive 6 just looks different with the tile based icons but they're both nice and with high quality graphics. iDrive 4 was MEH though, text based with minimal graphics.

My 2018 M3 has touch screen and I never used it. I know it's not fair but really it's useless

I have a 2018 with touchscreen and tbh I never use it. I prefer no one touch it anyways because you have to wipe it down after with a microfiber towel.

How do I access the screensaver? I had a 2017 M2 that the PCD rep programmed it for me - I do not see that option on my 2018. I know its just a clock but it was nice during nighttime driving.

you can switch to ID6 lite using the bimmercode app - i tried it and tbh i prefer ID5, the tiles are just too small to be usable, especially the nav map

the screen itself is just too far away to be touch friendly
