'Diff leak'

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Had the car in today at the dealer for an oil service and asked them to do an end of warranty check up. Car has 33k km's on the odo. All was well except the diff had a leak. Well leak might be a big word as I have never seen drips on the garage floor and when looking underneath the car, don't see any greasy spots on the diff housing. They booked the car in for 2 days beginning of December. One day to spot where the leak is coming from and order parts, other day to fix. And they told me there was a software update available which they will also do. They arranged a new 330i Touring as a loaner for two days. All within warranty.

Just wondering where the leak might come from? Anyway always good to do an end of warranty check up

What did you ever find out about this? Were they able to find and fix the leak?

If its like all M's before us, its the output shaft seals.

Probably correct. Porsche routed the exhaust pipes on the older Boxsters under the rear axle inner CV boots just like BMW did on our F8Xs, and I suspect the heat is deteriorating the seals. On the Porsches it would dry out and split the inner CV boots. On my stock exhaust there is a secondary plate welded on the exhaust pipe adjacent to the inner boots, so perhaps that's BMW's attempt at a heat shield.

I ordered some header tape and will be wrapping my exhaust where it runs past the diff. Perhaps this will buy me some time on the seals.

When you do that, you'll have a good look at the dog to see where it's leaking. Just make sure the fluid is topped off and you can go as long as you like—until you're annoyed ☺️

So far, my car isn’t leaking. This is a preventative measure.

Car is going in tomorrow and should have it back tuesday. Will post the outcome. It is a very small leak as I have never seen any oil on the floor and not even on the diff housing.

Picked the car up today, as they've had to order special tools yesterday. Was told the seals for both the output shafts and for the pro-shaft were replaced. Had a 430i GranCoupe and an X2 M35i as loaners.

Just had a quick look underneath the car, but it seems as if they've replaced one of the bushings in the subframe as well. At least it looks new
