M3 F80 Steering noise with video

Hi guys

I've done a search and found a few threads discussing this, but translating noises in words is always hard to convey, so i made a video of the steering noise i'm experiencing and thought it deserved a new thread that other members may be able to watch and give feedback if it was the same noise they have/had

As per the video, rotating the steering wheel while stationary does not create any noise, nor is there any noise while moving at speed. It only seems to make noise at crawl speeds (less than 3 km/h)

There is no mechanical issues with the car, ie; the steering noise is not affecting drive ability or steering feel at all, it purely noise only at this point, and can only be heard from inside the car - if i was to guess, i'd say it's something to do with the motor that alters the steering assistance at low speed

I will note the severity of the noise seems random, some days it's not even there, i recorded it at it's worst

Turn your speakers up, sound gets going at 0.10s

I believe it is normal, yet I have no explanation for it. I just always assumed it was the brakes.

Sounds normal to me. I believe it's your tires turning in place. Also, I would avoid doing this because people keep telling me its messing up the alignment.

lol definitely not tyre noise

Thinking about it noise came after first service - do they remove the front undertray or any other front subframe parts during that service to get to engine oil filler

I had exact same issue before. I removed the steering wheel and sparyed 'white lithum grease' inside of steering column. Solved

For those watching and future searches

I had the steering noise fixed today at dealer - SZL module replaced, which is essentially BMW speak for the clock spring (it is one complete unit including the stalks)

edit! noise is still there, recorded this video this morning - going back so dealer can setup some microphones and diagnose further (my inkling is top mounts or possible steering knuckle as the noise only happens when you're just moving the wheel enough to take up slack in the rack, if you rotate 1/4 more there's no noise)

problem has been diagnosed as passenger strut/top mount

i was able to hear and even feel the noise coming from the strut by touching the spring as steering was loaded

replacement parts are ex germany, so i should have them swapped out in 1-2 weeks

I am having the exact same noise coming from my 15' F82 but I noticed it after I had a shop lower my car on Swift Springs... Did BMW simply replace the top strut mount?

Hello guys

Have the same noise since the last weekend. Can you tell me exactly what part produces that noise?

I'm still waiting for the dealer to call me that the top mounts have come in from Germany - I'm expecting it to come in next week

I'm having similar noises coming fm steering wheel but only above 60km/hr and just going straight. No need to turn the wheel. Sounds like a creaking noise and only became noticeable after the weather warmed up.

had my top mounts replaced and the steering is silent

the dealer made the comment that where the top mount bearing and spring perch sit didn't have any grease left - they believe high pressure washing under guards can remove this grease and hence the noise

might make more sense for cars in snow or salt climates where detailers/owners go balls deep with the high pressure nozzle, but i doubt it for my car picked up during summer and washed in my garage for only 1-2 months before the sound started
