I thought the car was electronically limited to 250KPH, I hit over 260KPH

Hi, Guys

I was told all stock F80 M3 has speed limit of 250KPH.

I was reaching almost 270KPH the other day ~

What happened to my speed limiter?

I did EDC competition package coding, can this affect my speed limit?

Or was there a speedo and actual speed difference?

I due to update my software to latest version 2017~

Im pretty pissed, since software update will set the speed limit back to

250kph, as I was told by my SA.

1. Speedo calibration may be optimistic.
2. BMW is a little lax on the limit speed.

Cheers.

Governor on these cars doesn't actually kick in until an indicated 267kph (167mph), which is a bit optimistic. GPS speed is around 262ish kph (163mph).

Coding doesn't have any effect on that.

BWM overestimates the speedo reading, up to 10% - see the attached doc.

You can get the true reading from a GPS (eg, Waze).

It isn't that optimistic. Read the post above yours, he got it right

I found this to be incorrect. GPS clocked a m3 at 166mph speedo said 168.

Which part being incorrect?

I just pointed out a BMW document saying there is speedo overestimation, which can be UP TO 10%. Your case confirms that.

GPS reading is much more accurate, so I suggest to use that for a true reading. Are you arguing that point?

Doing the math it shows the speed being off by LESS then 2 percent. meaning the bmw m3 is not over estimated at all, merely off by a degree which can come to factors like tires

Read the pdf file to find out why BMW is doing this. [Hint: it mentions tires.]

It definitely wanted to keep going. In Germany when you buy one of these, you can check a box to up the limiter to 280kph. It felt like it would not have had any problem getting to that if it was enabled on my car.

There's another thread about top speed. Search and you'll find it.

In it, I posted a picture taken on the German Autobahn of the speedometer on my M4 showing top speed at 271 KPH, converts to 168.4 MPH.
