Oh wait it's actually not a race car. It's limited edition GT car where the focus is supposed to be on driver enjoyment. I guess if numbers on paper increase our enjoyment then yes I totally get that.

But I would suspect less than 1% of us here on the boards laps a specific track often enough and well enough to actually see reduced lap times from a dct transmission versus more engaging manual transmission. You realize how absurd it is to want to get the fastest possible transmission over a more fun transmission when you aren't even a competitor?

If you were really interested in lap times the first thing you'd do is sell the ridiculous wheels and get 18" lightweights with r comps. That alone would make you much quicker than a transmission swap.

This CS is ridiculous and barely improves the formula to warrant what will be an enormous price tag. It will undoubtedly sell out but BMW clearly phoned it in on this one. It's just lazy at this point. But good for them it will market well and sell out.
You sound upset. Personally I give zero shits, but there is no way BMW will ask for a $20K premium (or whatever) for a car that's not faster than the CP M4. Hence the transmission choice. Last time I checked, you could even wrap the AC vent slats in leather on a GT3, so I don't get how premium materials automatically invalidate a car as a "race car".

Sure, but there is a big difference between torque converter slushboxes that are slower than manual transmissions, and dual clutch systems that are faster. That's all I'm saying.

Shouldn't the show be starting right about now? I hope we get details on pricing. Competition package and colors that would otherwise be individual already puts it at $10K over the base car. DCT and all the cosmetic bobbins probably another $5K? In either case, I hope it's not truly limited, or getting one below MSRP will be impossible, so the actual premium for this version will be higher than what's on paper (considering you can get invoice on the M4 all day every day).

I don't understand this obsession with race cars for grandpas. DCT is here to stay and will be the default transmission for any performance car going forward. This is a "Competition" version, why would it not have the faster transmission?

Not quite. I would have preferred more DD practical amenities and more track oriented performance. The E46 M3CSL and E90 M3CRT are the best example that comes to mind. But the CS package still has my interest.

I'm surprised the M4 CS doesn't have 6MT as an option. I understand why on the GTS on the CS should be available, regardless of the performance and 0-60 penalty.

Otherwise, nice car!

BMW has launched a new version of the M4 at the Shanghai motor show. Called the M4 CS, it’s set for a limited, two-year production run, and will be lighter, faster, and more powerful than the standard M4.

The M4 CS – standing for Club Sport - name harks back to the E46 BMW M3 CS of 2005 – a runout model which borrowed performance parts from the hardcore CSL. The M4 CS aims to capture that same character, with a raft of additions and tweaks over the standard car – borrowed from the M4 GTS.

The twin-turbocharged straight-six engine has been tuned for extra grunt – it now produces 454bhp, which is a 29bhp boost on the standard car. That means 0-62mph is dispatched in just 3.9 seconds, while the car tops out at an electronically limited 174mph. No manual gearbox is on offer, so power is sent to the rear wheels exclusively through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

It’s not just extra power on offer, though. The M4 CS has had its suspension tweaked and stiffened to improve handling and grip. BMW claims it makes a real difference too, and quotes a 7min 38sec Nurburgring lap time for the CS. That’s a whole 22 seconds faster than a standard M4.

Another area that’s been improved is weight. The M4 CS is 32kg lighter than a standard model, thanks to carbonfibre-reinforced plastic replacements for the bonnet, roof, front splitter, rear diffuser and even the driveshaft. Overall weight is 1580kg.

Styling tweaks are minimal, so you’ll have to look hard to notice that this isn’t a standard car. The front splitter is more pronounced, while the boot lid gains a new lip spoiler. Subtle grey alloy wheels also feature, but they’re not just for show – they’re a new DTM-design light-alloy, created especially for the M4 CS. The front wheels are 19-inches while the rears are 20-inches.

On the inside there’s discreet CS badging, new sports seats, and an abundance of leather and alcantara. The lightweight touches also feature on the inside – the door cards have been lightened, with unique fabric door pulls rather than moulded ones.

No pricing details have been announced yet. The M4 CS was launched at the Shanghai motor show and we'll update this page with more pictures and details as we get them.

My guess is a 89k msrp, give or take a few.

I just hope that BMW decides to follow the same for the M2 (with no comp pack likely).

stock M2- sporty version of the M2
M2 ZL9- slight performance bump (suspension only) and minor cosmetics
M2 CS - additional performance but DCT for the " wanna go faster " types
M2 GTS - just put a window sticker on the M2 safety car -

I just hope that an M2 GTS gets handicapped with a manual so that it doesn't outperform the M4 GTS.
You sure are very very optimistic.

You know what you want with the M2 GTS is not gonna happen right. You can't have the cake and eat it too.
