If the old rumors hold true, then the next 1M was supposed to get some sort of 4 cylinder...but those rumors also had the N55 as the basis of the next M3 engine, so who knows...

I would think they are making the N55 a bit bigger, 3.3-3.4 liters

you can actually disable the rear engine for fuel economy.

Bmw is currently working on a way to make it all work and still provide storage space in the rear.

ppp

p.s. can you say perfectly balanced awd beast, hope they keep the weight down.

I'll believe it when I see it. Even if this comes to fruition, it sounds like a reliability, maintenance and upkeep nightmare.

Three turbos don't make any sense on a 6 cylinder, especially a V6. Besides, they're trying to make the engine simpler and lighter. The only arrangement I see improving throttle response is a sequential twin-turbo. Variable vane single turbos for half the cylinders each (like BMW is using now) might seem comparable, but with half the exhaust volume, throttle response is half as good as with all exhaust volume going thru sequential turbos. Not a turbo fan at all, but would like to read the experts' comments on that issue .

Surly, the end game has to be "one electrically powered turbo per cylinder".

Is there really a need for exhaust gasses to drive a turbo?

May be the next M3 will start this process with an "electric turbo per two cylinder"?

BMW with their I6 is like Porsche with having the engine at the back. Sure, there may be better ways of engineering it, but porsche was stubborn and perfected their engine location design. BMW did the same with their I6, they made it better and better over time with the latest iteration having a twin scroll turbo (with a great exhaust note I might add). They'll use the I6 I'm sure in the M3 and I'm sure it'll be fantastic like the older M3s.

That is probably pretty true.

4.4 liter v8 = 4400cc/8 = 550 per cylinder
3.3 liter v6 = 3300cc/6 = 550 per cylinder

I would think the V angle would be a problem though. If BMW is developing 3 cylinder engines with the use of advanced balance shafts maybe they aren't too phased by the problem though.

I am concerned that this would impact its "free/high" revving nature though.

I believe they see Nissan as a direct performance threat in this competitive market and proof shows that many guys dumped their V8 M3's once the new GTR was released. Check these forums for the ones who switched over.
doubt bmw sees nissan as a threat mainly because nissan isnt a direct competitor company to company or m3 to gtr. so what nissan did doesnt apply to what bmw might do. when they have had all these great engines they wouldnt go and mess it up because their sales would fall through and thats what is more important on an economical standpoint for them.

This is so far out in left field that it isn't funny. The new V8 powered M cars have souped up BMW motors and it is reasonable to believe this policy will follow through for the Next M3.
