Best cold air intakes - and purchase location
What cold air intakes have people used ?
There are so many available - have you noticed any real world performance improvements ? Last edited by drgmt; 09-23-2017 at 04:00 PM.. |

Surely there are better ways to spend $3k though..?
Seems incredibly expensive for what it offers?

What do you get?
A little more intake noise and a lot more visual impact, if you open your bonnet? Performance gains are minimal right? M tax pisses me off lol. I can remember doing a carbon intake in a MK6 GTI that cost under 1k.

front mount is huge fail for functionality - don't know any manufacturer who puts exposed air filters in direct path of rain, road film, bugs, etc
re eventuri @ 3k, well #yolo, worth a punt and always a market to sell it down the road |

Can I ask where you purchased? 3K is a very good deal.

There are zero power gains with cold air intakes. I’m surprised the companies get away with those dyno plots.
They look good and the intake noise is nice. But there are no restriction points to cold air in most high performance turbo charged cars. I’ve tested this on many cars I’ve Owned and have never shown a meaningful dyno difference. When dynoed properly that is. In some cases you will actually loose power. Local workshop who bought my awe intake gained 8rwkw on their shop m3 back to back with no change in tuning map. So although small and not something you'd feel, technically there is a restriction to the stock airbox on a tuned car |

With all due respect that’s just about that +/- error on the dyno, then you factor in user error etc.
A mapped car may introduce additional variables. I’m referring to a stock ECU. There is really no restriction in the stock airbox. The awe may slightly improve filtration efficiency, but delivers very little additional cold air. Calculate the flow dynamics stock vs awe. Run three separate runs over a couple of days and you will see there are no real gains measurable. The average would be 3-5Kw at the wheel, which is actually not significant when you look at the standard error of the dyno. Run a high quality BMC filter without the charcoal filter - and you will see the same 3-5kW gains. A dyno is very easy to manipulate. A factor that intake companies exploit understandably to their benefit. |

8rwkw was the average across multiple runs, same dyno same time in house
No manipulation of data necessary - they are not a retailer for awe, have no affiliation with the brand, nor was this used for any marketing material, this was purely in name of science to see if there was any gain by ditching the oe setup But it seems like you've now answered your own question in op, onto next project.... |

You guys watched a different video. If you sit through it the one out the front consistently MADE POWER. Only 3 KW on that Pile of shit.
However there intake was way too long. A turbo should have the shortest intake practicable. I have the MSR. It is the shortest, with the largest contined diameter, and it is in the cold air. A POD FILTER MAKES NO POWER, why? Because that is a HOT air intake. If you have not been in an MSR equipped car you really cannot comment. I don't care How many KW my intake makes on the dyno. As I do not race on the dyno. I have plenty of video of me racing people at the track, pulling on guys with much higher dyno numbers than I. Have them pasted on my facebook. So keep telling yourself they make no power at all. That video actaully proved they do. They should shorten that hose but still have it in cold air. Also as the car moves the MSR makes even more power the faster you go. Ask Porsche. The Gt3 RS has ram flow and so does the 991.2 both claiming an extra 15HP from it. Not here to convince anyone. If you are in Brisbane, Happy to race you. : ) Take care. Don't believe everything you see or read on the internet. The M4 ECU is considerable more capable than any of those cars tested. You keep feeding it fresh cold air and it will give you more power.
