My understanding is that the primary purpose of this insulation is for sound deadening, not heat insulation.

There are actually different kind of insulation car manufacturers use under their hoods. Some are for sound, but my understanding is most insulation (under the hood) are for safety.

I am curious, what "safety" aspect would it be for?

Absolutely 100% positive my 2008 e92 m3 had factory underhood insulation.
A friend who owns an f80 m3 saw the insulation and asked me the same exact question as he was surprised it wasn't on his m3! So question is ... why did early m3s have it? Later years not. QUOTE=CanAutM3;20993906]Are you sure it came that way from the factory? Because according to RealOEM, there was no underhood insulation even on early E92 M3 builds (no item listed for #1 on chart below)... It think it is more a performance oriented decision that a "cost cutting" one. The principal purpose of this insulation is sound deadening. On an ///M car, sound deadening is less of a concern and removing weight and improving engine bay cooling are beneficial to performance.[/QUOTE] |

Yes. My 2008 m3 had it. It had an m logo stamped on it too.
I just traded it in for an f80. If I still had it i would post a pucture. Q[/B]UOTE=JamesGames;20994263]Did you have a 2008? I don't think the 2008s have them since I remember comparing the e92 m3 and wondering why it didn't have it when normal E9x had them at a dealer. Your link simply shows an M3 after discontinuation. You don't think I know what year my M3 was? Some 2008's have it, some don't. My M3 had a build date in 02/2008. It's not on realoem b/c it is no longer for sale.

You misread my post - I said nothing about knowing what an E92 is.
You questioned me if I had a 2008 M3. Yes, I had a 2008 M3. Thanks. Last edited by badbimmer; 12-16-2016 at 07:37 PM.. |

I don 't think this thread was pointless at all. We got some valid information out of this thread. BMW DISCONTINUED all hood insulation for 3 series vehicles SINCE 5/2008 per below SIB. However, I would still like to know why as this thread attempted to answer. That's what these threads are for, to learn as much as possible about our cars.
As I proposed earlier, it's a cost cutting effort by BMW which some forum members didn't seem to like to hear. There is no good reason to delete the hood insulation for all 3 series. And I don't think this is something that have should been removed for safety and other reasons. ------------------ SI B51 16 08 Body Equipment June 2008 Technical Service SUBJECT Hood Insulation Pad Discontinued MODEL E90, E91 (3 Series) produced from 5/2008 E92, E93 (3 Series) produced from 6/2008 The hood insulation pad (1) has been discontinued in series production on all 3 Series models from May or June of 2008 depending on model. I took this pic of mine in Sept of 2008 and my car was probably built around May of 2008?
Reminds me of how little I miss that car. At the time I thought it was so awesome but now I'm so happy I no longer own it. The joys of car ownership.

It's all good! Lesson learned how things around here spiral out of control.
Imagine if your door jambs and underside of the boot weren't painted! Wonder if all those people ever got theirs sprayed?
