Wheel purchases O/S. Customs/UPS charges?

Hi,

Just a quick query.

I purchased a set of wheels overseas, my first time doing so that's why I'm a bit confused about the customs payment.

I recently received an invoice from UPS/customs stating:

Quote:
Hi Damian,

Good day!

I just want to make a follow up regarding payment of customs charge for shipment coming from ***** in Taiwan.

Invoice # ********
Amount: $ 323.44 aud

Please confirm if payment has been organized for us to release and arrange the delivery. You may call us at 131-877 option 4 to arrange a payment by credit card or if you wish to pay thru EFT or Bpay I would appreciate if you can send me a copy of receipt.
So for those that have purchased wheels(or other large items) from overseas, is it normal for customs to charge for release of the package? And does that charge of $323 sound about right?

Just want to be sure I'm not getting jibbed before I make payment.

Damian

Is this not simply the GST?

Customs will charge you 5% import duty plus 10% gst when you bring the wheels in. This needs to be paid before delivery of the goods

RE: Wheel purchases O/S. Customs/UPS charges?

Customs will charge you 5% import duty plus 10% GST or Goods and Services Tax. Goods with a customs value of AUD$1,000 or less referred to as low value goods, that you purchase from overseas may now include goods GST. I suggest you go check out ACC Adelaide aiport customs clearance and then GST will apply at the point of sale in the same way it does when you buy goods from a business in Australia.

Some larger companies charge the GST in the purchase price. These will come through no issues.

Others don't charge. Several things can happen. You can get lucky, and it will come through with no charges. Sometimes the transport company will contact you to pay. Sometimes customs will contact you directly.

If something seems to be held up, lost, you don't know whats happening there are specialist customs brokers you can get who chase it up, sort out the paperwork, expedite a speedy transit etc, but they charge a fee on top of the taxes
