I don't know man, the Macan is so slow for the $ being asked. Isn't the Macan Turbo something on the order of 106mph trap speed? Might as well get a cheap E90 335xi that is "full bolt on" for a quarter of the cost

If I were in the OP's shoes, I would split that 1 expensive AWD car into 2 cars, and get a toy and a diesel small SUV

OP's picks are like all season tires. OK at everything, but not great, and very costly

M550i MSRP is already announced at $72,100, so you can add ~$7,000 in options and still keep it under $80K. And it comes with A LOT of stuff standard.

not a fan of the Macan, if I ever buy a Porsche its going to be a Cayman or Carrera 4S (but has to be when kids are older...)

Audi S3/RS3 that a few suggested is too small with my kids in the back, my seat position already is at my kids knees/feet with booster in the M3.

Maybe I should have added this to the list, 505 horsepower, can send 100% power to rear wheels! no clue on price, but looks like it should be a X3M competitor. Always liked Alfa

I would stick with the M550i. After VAG showing their true colors, there is no way in the hell I would purchase a car from them and expect it to hold its value due to their actions or future actions. If you are going to lease so they are on the hook for the future value of the car, can get a good deal and protect your own money from them, then.....heck, I would still go the route of the M550i with the Sportback being a 2nd option.

yeah my S3 is a bit on the small side. plenty nice and quick (tuned) but not nearly as fun to wail on as the M3 was. the 550i has always been a good car but just sporty enough for me. I think if I have a sports car in the stable I'd be OK with it, but as a one trick pony and also AWD, I'd be looking hard at the S6

splitting the car is what I ultimately did. some people are perfectly fine with all season tires and get along just fine with it.

the Macans aren't crazy fast but I forget their numbers ... you get a sporty looking/feeling car supposedly on a good chassis that is also fairly nice to be in. You definitely pay a lot for the true heavy hitters from porsche.... a FBO e90 would be fast but would feel 100yrs old in comparison, and be smaller. e90 n54s do have a place in my heart though as that was what got me hooked on BMWs.

test drives and a subjective, honest assessment is usually what it takes to make the final call. the main issue we all run into is that there really isn't usually a right or wrong answer.

splitting into 2 cars was what I had to do... e90 335i is how I got hooked on BMW. loved it but it would feel so old now. the macan is expensive for the grunt but overall it's likely a really nice daily driver. op isn't looking for a Texas mile or road course car.

any of these cars would be great. I'd want to test drive the new 550i and S6 back to back, maybe X5 50i and GLE equivalent.

Seems like p85d can be had for sub $80k now. It's awd, quick from a dig and has a hatch.

Just might be the best sub $80k commuter car?

Is the 550 still far out to be released? At the moment the only thing on their website is a 540.

None of those are in the same league as the M3.

New option may be Jaguar XE SVR, rumor V8 5L 500hp and AWD.

Go drive the Macan Turbo with performance pack. I'd bet it is close with the standard M3.

TTRS or 911 4 is another option if your not driving the kids.

For me, the next car will be a slightly used 911 4S. The I would be realizing a boyhood dream.
