There is a lot more that I want from a car then 0 to 60 times. I don't give a shit about gas mileage and I take backroads home when traffic is bad here in the NY area.

Are EVs better for Mother Earth then ICE cars? Debatable.

Do I want to plan a long trip around charging stations? Hell to the NO.

Different strokes as they say. I look at EVs as appliance cars. Joe Shmoo point A to B types (not saying that's you just generalizing).

Honestly I'm surprised you leave a 911 in the garage and take the electric. There we go again different strokes.

I think the other posters are correct. If the OP has to ask this question he should pick the Tesla.
YEA!!!! I'm surprised too.. I would not in a million years have thought I would do that or be posting these positive things about EVs. But here I am!

I'm probably going to always have a gas sports car around for the sounds and MT and etc but for all the reasons I described, I'm sold on EV for street usage

Go try out a super powered Tesla, or in the cheapo class, Spark EV is the winner!!
I've been known to be resistant to change. God my wife says it all the time. I'll have to give it a shot one of these days.

I would also have to have other ICE cars at my disposal. It can't be EV only.

What do you guys think the "take" ratio is on EV cars currently? I really don't see that many on the road and I'm in suburban NY area.

I'm not so sure Joe Public is ready to give up ICE SUVs yet.

Seems like 0.7% market share from 2011 to 2017, and around 1% in 2017

Yes, that's the way I look at it. Cheapo EV frees up funds to have an even more focused and extreme weekend toy.

When you do try an EV, make it an AWD+ 500+hp version (my first ride in EV was in that P90D at Mosport). If you start off with a Leaf you'll just confirm your bias of why EV suck

EDIT: OP, I think you should push back your model 3 reservation until the production issues sort out, and until you drive new competitors like i-pace and mission e. There's too much cool stuff coming down the pipeline to commit to a beta test (unless you are a HUGE Tesla fan...)

I picture myself as a potential EV customer when it comes time to replace our daily but it likely will be from a traditional OE. Pretty sure in 4 years or so there will be a lot more competition this space.

If you are looking for a commuter car, get the Model 3. If you are looking for a GT car, get the M3. For reference, this Model 3 did Laguna Seca in 1min 57sec. That puts it behind a Honda Civic Si.

Think again about taking this on Canyon Run (or other longer spirited drive). After pulling into the pits, the battery had 94 miles of driving range left. It started with 229, meaning the Model 3 "used" 135 optimal driving miles in the 20 or so real-world miles piled up lapping Laguna Seca 9 times.

The Tesla was modded as follows:
2017 Tesla Model 3 (rear wheel drive, long range 310 mile, premium upgrades)
19" TSportline cast wheels w/ Pirelli PZero Nero GT tires (PSI: 33 front / 35 rear)
Lowered 1.5" w/ ‘moderate’ springs from Unplugged Performance

I’d wait for the TM3 LCI with Comp Pack or TM3 CS.

We had a deposit on the model 3, finally cancelled it a month and half ago and glad we did. We also wanted the dual drive and while I'm.okay waiting after seeing it on the road it literally looked so cheap i thought it came of the movie Demolition Man. We finally got a chance to sit in it a couple of weeks ago and I'm sorry. I really like Tesla overall but the interior of the 3, much like the S and X still feel very custom and cheap. To me it doesn't feel "finished".
You can't compare a BMW to a Tesla either. In my opinion the BMW styling (throughout all model years) is just a classic and timeless design. The model S is already aged and boring design. The only good looking vehicle they have is the X.

With that said i would never give up my F80 for a tesla or any other car for that matter.

For reference our little grocery getter is a Nissan Leaf dumped on Blitz coilovers with G35 wheels.

I won't buy a Tesla instead of an M3 for the same reason why I choose Rolex or Omega watches over an Apple Watch.

Ironic since I'm an IT Executive and manage a large software development organization.

^ that's a bit different?

Mechanical watch these days is just a statement of that you love watches and can spend $. There are zero advantages in terms of telling time versus even a Casio $60 g shock

Electrics actually have commuting advantages (carpool, half off tolls, sometimes free charging, better parking, semi autonomous capability) vs a traditional German car.

The "advantage" is that I like them a lot better. It's that simple. Plus, I don't have any commute/parking problems and you won't catch me dead wearing an Apple watch.

I work in IT as well and still rock a Breitling over an Apple Watch.

After test driving a few M4's this past weekend, I'm completely sold on the car. Now it's just a matter of finding the right one.

Thanks everyone for their input. I do see an EV as a second car in the future, but for now, I'm going to go back to an M3/M4.

I run a commercial technology-as-a-service program and rock a Tag Heuer over..well a Galaxy Gear since I have a GS8+ and can't use an iWatch...but same principle

Doesn't the Chevy Bolt getter the best EV reviews consistently?

The quality difference between the two is substantial, but obviously the M3 costs a bit more as well.

I don't think the Tesla is remotely worth the money, but I am clearly biased in owning an M3 already.
