Question on buying out of state
For those who have purchased their M3/M4 from a dealer outside of your home state, did you negotiate with the dealer that had your car directly or with a local dealer? If the dealer that had the car, what did you do about a trade in?
Reason I ask is that I am outside Chicago and see an M3 in CA that I want which I would have shipped. The question is more about negotiating and working with the trade in... Thanks.

Assuming you don't want to ship your car to CA (trust me you don't) you can approach your local dealer and ask them for a buy bid. This effectively allows you to trade your car in locally, and use the value towards the out of state car purchase - thus only having to pay sales tax on the price difference.
I almost ended up doing this with my last M3, but ended up selling it privately.

I have bought several cars out of state, including my M3. I ordered it from a dealer in Texas and had it delivered to the Performance Center for delivery. Negotiation was the same as local, if not easier since it was mostly via e-mail, text, and phone. Your trade in is going to make your deal a little more difficult. You should probably start with the local dealer and see what they can do to get the car you want. Dealer trades, shipping, etc. all cost money though, so local deal may not be as good as Carmax and working with CA dealer directly, even factoring in tax credits for trade and you paying shipping. Also, if the local dealer is going to get the car for you, make sure they are going to use a shipping method you approve of. They will try to save money here and I have had dealers try to have it delivered by a driver, pull it on a two wheel buggy, all sorts of stuff.

FYI, unless you are having the car shipped, get to know your states registration laws.
I live in MA and bought a CPO Porsche from a MI dealer. The dealer set up a temporary tag and I drove it home (through Canada and NY) only to much later find out that MA does not recognize such registrations and I was technically driving uninsured and unregistered for 2 hours inside MA. This despite asking questions ahead of time to the dealer and the insurance company telling them what I was doing. Never doing that again. I'v picked up my BMW's through ED from other states. In both cases I already owned the car and made sure to register it in MA first and bring my plates with me. |

Tip from me:
I ordered a car in NY, and a few months later I got a ticket in NJ, because my inspection sticker was from NY rather than NJ. It was very douchie of that shithead cop, instead of just telling me to go fix it. I mean who checks their inspection sticker, and the dealer knew I was taking the car home to NJ. So whenever you buy out of state, get the local stuff done. |
