Well here's one. Stock M4 with adaptive threw this code yesterday. No track time. It's my buddy's car - will work on getting specifics from him.

There was one that threw a similar code where I live last week. Also no track time and completely stock (code on the first drive out of the dealership). Hopefully BMW figures out what is going on for the cars impacted.

Hello f8x members,
I have f30 with edc but I also have KW EDC delete and it still throws 'chassis malfunction' after few laps.
I just want to add that the KW EDC delete won't solve the issue.

Well that's discouraging if holds true for F8X. Haven't heard of a passive suspension car doing it yet though, so maybe EDC delete not disabling the entire system?

I heard of another M4 going into limp mode after a few laps at Spring Mountain with Speedventures a couple of weeks ago.

Tested out the EDC disconnect as a possible temporary solution, and it does appear it will work for track use (thanks MasterC17!). My SA and foreman thought the car would go into limp mode, but they are wrong. Here's the simple DIY:

1) Disconnect the small wire clip going into each front strut (actually, upon further thinking, just disconnecting one would probably have the same effect and disable the entire EDC system). Tuck away or zip tie if you wish.

2) Start car. It will say "Chassis Function Restricted, Consult Service Center" (sound familiar). The mode display will say Efficient power, blank for suspension, and Sport for steering (mine is 6MT car). If you try to push M button to get your track settings to come up, nothing will happen. You have to change your settings individually. To turn DSC off for track use hold the traction control button down for a second or two, you'll see the "DSC inactive" warning come up. Just pressing it quickly will only put it in MDM mode.

I drove around town and the car works fine with no restriction. It's definitely feels like Sports Plus suspension, which will be fine for the track.

I'll be taking the M4 for a test and tune June 20. I plan to run a couple of sessions with the cables connected to see if replacing the strut did the fix, but if I have problems again I've got this protocol that should allow me to continue my track day.

Come to think of it, when I got these malfunctions on the track before, I never did once try to get the nannies back off and power back manually. I would just try hitting the M button which of course did nothing.

Proceed at your own risk. The shocks default to a non-active full firm condition, which is stiffer than sport+ and not tuned for proper balance. They aren't designed or tested to be driven in this condition for long periods, so you run the risk of wearing out the damper much faster of you do this.

I will let you know if I destroy mine. Been about 2k miles no notable problems.

Thanks, I don't doubt it. It feels really stiff with them disconnected. I'll only disconnect them as a backup plan if the car throws faults at the track next time.

BMW should fund some track days, for testing and diag purposes. I am only barely half joking.

Hmm, I have a '16 on order with adaptive suspension. Now I'm debating on modifying the order. Then again a couple of problems doesn't mean every car will have the problem. Subbing for updates

I was at the track with another M4 with adaptive suspension this weekend and it ran fine all weekend in the advanced group. If it is a systemic problem, not all cars are seeing it yet. It could be mods, it could be a faulty issue with the car, it could be systemic... hard to say at this point. I wouldn't change my order if I were you... if it's a problem, BMW will address it and existing cars will get fixed IMO.

Yes Chris, thanks. M4 ran great on Saturday. Four 20 minutes sessions in advanced DE group and no chassis error codes at all. Seems as if replacing the right strut worked. EDC cables still connected, never needed to go to plan B. Thanks everyone, more detailed report here.

any updates?

i got it this evening.

i disconnect the battery to re-install my BMS Stg 1. installed piggyback. reconnected battery. fired up car. adjusted time/clock. went to push M1. M1 symbol flashed. Da Fuq? parking brake off, shifted to reverse. was about to give some gas and that's when i got the message.

flashed on screen. then 2 seconds, went away. check out 'vehicle settings' to see if the code was still there. NOPE, all systems OK.

am i crazy to just do nothing and see if it comes back?

i'm on adaptive. no springs, but running RE71Rs.

Doing nothing is fine. I mean, what are you really going to do except take it in for service? The code is stored anyway so they can just look it up next time you're in if it seems to be running fine now.

Mine decided to do it again a few days ago when I was simply pulling it out of my storage unit and it was idling there for few minutes. This is the first time it's done it for me not on the track. I shut it off, restarted, and has been fine for a few days of street driving.

I'm not going to worry about it right now, I'll just mention it at next service. I'll go to plan B (disconnect EDC cables) if it does it at my next track day.

Update:

My car has thrown the "Chassis Malfunction" code at least 3-4 times lately while just driving normally on the street and a couple of times when its just sitting there idling getting it out of storage. Annoying.

It will be going in again soon for 10,000 mile service.

This just happened to me. Totally stock car, never been to a track, drive pretty normal. I took it to get gas, drove slow in traffic to get there. Filled up the tank, started the car and got that error. Stopped and started the car again and no error. I hope nothing bad happens as I've seen others post about needing to flatbed their car.

Don't worry, no one has ever needed a flatbed for this issue. It usually goes away if you stop and restart car, annoying yes. Worse case scenario, you could disconnect the EDC cables going into the struts and drive in sport+ suspension setting. You can have it looked at, they might replace the sensor as a first step.

Update on my M4: Left strut, sensor, and cable replaced at recent 10K service. Both struts have now been replaced along with sensors and cables. Car driving fine at moment.
