Sucks that this happened to you. This is the advantage of leasing because you don't have to worry about it in two years. Even if it gives you some trouble, it will be covered under warranty. If you had bought it, then you would have had a true mess on your hands.

Agree although I was going to buy at the end of the lease as I had a good pricing due to ED. I may have to revisit that idea if they put in 'water damage' on CarFax.

What does the euro delivery discount matter? you will be paying MSRP x residual %

(or at least hopefully that is how your lease end purchase price and monthly depreciation payment were calculated, and not the tricky "net cap cost x residual %")

nicknaz is right. The negotiated price on a lease means nothing. The buyout is based on the residual and with the high M3 residuals, it's not a great deal. Now you can always negotiate for a lower buyout, but you are unlikely to get a great deal. You are better off riding out the lease and doing another ED with financing next time if you plan on keeping the car. You could also turn the car in and buy another used M3 at the time.

Dude are you serious? WTF getting water-locked in 8 inches of water at 10mph! Either you are exaggerating down the scenario or that is a frightful commentary on how vulnerable these cars are. Sure you "should" go slower but surprise puddles happen. Sincerely hope you are bending the truth about the water facts.

I personally define 1-2" as puddle... 8-10" is a lot of water

Guys, I'm not exaggerating. It is a back street so no speed more than 25 under normal circumstances. I intentionally slowed down as much as I can. BMW center thinks at 8.25" the way front air damns are they could have created frontal wake that made the water ride in. I'm as dumbfounded as all you are and am sick to my stomach as it has never happened my years of driving. I'm not the only one with this occurrence. Agree it is more than piddle but I expected it to be no more than 4" when I decided to wade through. Just be more prudent next time.

Re buyout at the end, you guys are right. I knew that right after I write that. It is based on US MSRP so no biggie deal unless the used car market is so strong for the M4. I see 3 year old M3 coupe going for high price but who knows what it will be in 2017. Most likely I'll do another ED in 2017 for 6er coupe or perhaps even a Tesla.

My BMW service center dropped a new engine, found that both turbos needed to be replaced and then could not calibrate the starter motor within specs so replacing that now. Insurance has agreed to pay for all ($41k) and am glad they did not total it. As per BMW, these are reparable but spares are not carried. Easier to replace with new units.

Finally...insurance actually walked the walk. Good for you.

I would think 10 mph is too fast under the 8 inches or so water level obviously since the way you described it, if it were me no matter what I would idle though it at about 3 mph.

If you even look at a boat in a no wake zone the amount and size of a wake of water is huge at 10 vs the no wake zone speed of 5. Not to mention the wake produced by others coming in the opposite direction.

After hearing these stories I will either avoid deeper water all together, or drive at less speed than idle to navigate through water. Thanks for the post anyway and sorry to hear your loss this may help others.

You are correct. I will be a lot more prudent and conservative as well.

It doesn't take much water into the car at all to cause major damage. Basically if you get more water in than is evaporated by the heat before compression in a cylinder, you are probably pretty screwed.

Also OP didn't get out and measure the water, so we really don't know if it was only 8" or 12" or what. (no offense OP, but you know what i mean yea?)

Also please let us know if there is any new news? Is your car fixed yet? Hoping for the best for you.

Yes I measured while waiting for tow.
Car is fixed and now going through break-in period. New engine, new turbos and starter.

I hear you. Of course had I known it was more than the usual I would not have. And no, I do drive when it rains. A car should not be a garage queen when it rains or snows. I did not buy a 'dry weather only' car!!!

Understood but you can't be a numb skull either. Who drives through huge puddles in this type of car? SUV yes, M3 no.
