Anyone change oil during break in period as extra precaution?

Maybe a change at 500 km isn't a bad idea.

Does bmw run a special oil initially out of the factor for the run in period.

Just run it until 1200 miles and change it out then. No need to get super OCD about it

no they don't run a special oil. Of course you can do it yourself, just use the recommended oil and the correct filter.

But use your common sense and ask yourself why? What honest benefit would changing the oil at 600 miles or whatever do for you? Are you going to own the car to 100k miles? 200k miles? You have warranty coverage for 50,000 miles, any engine issues will usually show up before that. Any metal in the oil that causes issues will have surfaced by then, say burning oil because the rings aren't sealing, etc. But how often have you ever heard of that?

I would concern yourself more with how you are breaking the motor, transmission and diff in than metal in the oil. Like are you taking very short trips to get up to operating temperature, varying the loads on the engine, letting it engine break then letting it cool down to ambient and repeating the process? Or do you just drive it like normal, sitting in summer traffic letting it heat up, or sitting on the highway at the same engine speed?

That is worse than some minute metal shavings in the oil.
