Wait for new M3 or used 997 turbo
Guys,
I've owned my E92 for 3 years now with 40K miles. I am thinking about my next car purchase and had a random thought about these two. I initially was set on waiting for the new M3, but I think I could swing a slightly used 997 turbo in the next year. The car will be my daily driver, but practicality is not a huge concern as it is only me at the moment. Is this a no brainer for the 997 or would the new M3 be worth the wait? The most logical solution would be to wait for the M3 and then decide, but I thought that this might make for an interesting discussion. |

Your logic is correct sir.
We still don't have any concrete details on the new M3/M4's performance, it's all speculation at this point. The 997, while a great car, may not be a suitable daily driver in the long run. The M3/M4 will seat 4 comfortably and will be a better everyday car as opposed to the 997. It's no slouch either. It may be just you at the moment, but when you do find that special lady it might be a nice gesture of faith to be driving around in a luxury sports car that seats a family as opposed to a full on sports car for speed nuts

I'm sure the M3/M4 will be a great car, but not until all the kinks are straightened out first - which won't happen until 2015 or even 2016. As is the case with the current M5 that is dealing with major recalls; it's an amazing car but can't truly be amazing until it's deemed fully reliable. Which, at the moment, it cannot.

I am in a similar situation - I took delivery of my e92 335 on 4/07 and just hit 50k on the clock. By 2015, I should have around 85-90k miles and of course will look at a new M4 and am now considering a used 991 2S/4S. I wonder how close the daily driving experience will be between my FBO N54 and the new engine in the M4. I have always had FI cars so will need to decide if I want to change to a high-revving NA flat 6. The 997 turbo is a beast indeed but the 991 is a work of art...

Honestly I am so thankful that I can afford to have this "problem" I am really happy with my E92, so I might just hunker down for another 3 years with this car until something REALLY catches my fancy.
Another random thought would be to keep this and get a second car. I've had some thoughts about an exige S |

This question has been asked since the dawn of time.
New vs Used. For $100k you can get a new GTR or a Used Gallardo. To me it's just a question of rather or not you can live with a used car. That is the question.

I would go for a nice 911 (I am currently in the market as well) and trade it in for a new M4 once the 2nd year production is on.

Assuming price is reasonable, I'll go for a 997.2 turbo in case it's less than 15K miles, but it's never a no brainer when it comes down to comparing a new car with a used one.

If you want a sports car -> Porsche
If you want a sporty car that can be an all rounder -> M3/M4 It all depends on what you are planning to do with the car. sounds like you are a single guy that is doing well, which is the best time to enjoy a supercar. |

I just sold a Gt3 and used it as my mostly daily practical car. You are right that it is a bit challenging sometimes but mostly due to the front lip and they are cheap and easy to replace. Otherwise, well worth it as they are sublime drivers and yet still fairly practical in terms of space and comforts....imo.

It depends on what you want out of a car. Do you want a great all around daily driver? Would you be willing to sacrifice some practicality for more speed? All of the answers given thus far are good, but it depends on what you are looking for. I needed a daily driver that had enough room for my wife plus a baby seat and could be taken to the track occasionally. I had a 335i that was modified. It was fast, a good daily driver, but not great on the track. I sold the 335i and got an E90 M3 which was a great all around daily driver, good at the track, but ultimately felt too slow in a straight line for me (my 335i was faster in a straight line). So I was in your predicament. Do I wait for the new M3 or get a used 997TT. I didn't want a used car, and I didn't think the new M3 will be fast enough for me. I wanted something that was going to be stupid fast. So in the end, I got a new Nissan GT-R. It has room for my wife plus a baby seat. I drive it daily in Los Angeles. It is great at the track. In terms of speed, it was fast for sure, but I also got the GT-R because I knew it responded well to mods. So a few bolt on mods, a custom tune, and E85 gas, and it now makes over 700hp. To me, it's the ultimate daily driver. It does everything my E90 M3 did but is 100 times faster. If money wasn't an object, I might have gone with a 997 Turbo S which is also ridiculously fast and easy to mod, but is $50K more than my GT-R which I couldn't justify.
