Tire Wear/Camber
How many miles should we expect to get out of our Michelin PSS tires?
I just brought my car in for service at 17k miles and I knew the rears were due soon, but to my surprise the inside rear of the tire had worn to the point that the metal cord was exposed. I do not track the car, just spirited driving. I've looked at the tires and the outside wall and center still had come meat left, so I figured a couple thousand miles, but the inner tire could only be seen if I got underneath the car. Disclaimer* The passenger rear tire was replaced at 6k miles (dealer put a nail in it.) Could the new tire on the passenger rear have caused the driver side rear to wear out that way? I am attaching a pic of the front and rear tire for reference of tire wear. |

It does look like a camber issue. Have you had an alignment done recently? The fact that one tire was replaced should have no bearing on the wear of its mate on the other side. But I must say, if you got 17K miles out of these tires they don't owe you anything - I usually don't get more than 12K or so out of high performance summer tires.

This is totally normal for every M-car I've ever had. 17K miles is a LOT if you drive like a dick - I usually plan on 10-12 and if I can get to 15 it's bonus.
But, yeah, always check the inside on any decent sports-type car - is this your first one? You're lucky it didn't cause an accident on a fast corner or something net-net: inside wall is the first largest place for tire wear and that's totally normal

Your rear tire seems pretty worn out across the entire tread. Should have been replaced a long time ago IMO.
You must be doing a lot of straight line driving

Replacing my rears at 13k, my fronts have at least 50% of tread remaining. Why are those that replace all 4 doing that unless the fronts are worn or old and cracking?

because it's dumb to mix new and old rubber on a $70,000 performance car - the front are what stops your car. But if all you're doing is buying groceries and driving to Church with Grandma, then maybe you don't need to.

I noticed some slight outer wear on both rear tires, is it true that the the MPSS is made of two compounds, the outer one being softer than the inner?

Thanks, so that minimal outer rear tire wear should not be attributed to camber but rather to tire construction and driving patterns?
The pic says even wear because of that belt tech, but it kinda contradicts itself... how could it be even wear, when the outer contact patch is softer and let's say the driver induces oversteer, or because of track driving, wouldn't this cause uneven wear? |

I have this exact same issue. Is this how everyone's tires are wearing? I do a ton of straight line driving.
Getting a whole set of 4S's installed today. |
