I propose a ban on all sound related discussions henceforth, at least until people here are getting their cars and can hear in person.

Otherwise (particularly if these threads make the main page) we'll get the usual folks from other forums who pop in to tell us how awful a car they haven't heard sounds, people will defend it, everyone will be arguing about how an iPhone video uploaded to youtube sounds through their work speakers (does it sound better than the tinny sounding E90 or Z4 or M5 videos also recorded on iPhones now uploaded to youtube? how much better? how much worse?)

This is just nonsense.

(oh, and for all the visitors from other car forums, the fact there is active sound is nothing new to us. Thanks for showing up now to tell us you don't like active sound and how much you like your car (which doesn't have it). Really, appreciate it. But, we are all good here so feel free to go back to talking about your cars and how much you like them. No no, don't let us keep you. Off you go now. Attaboy.)

BMW can play with this all they want so long as it can be coded to turn off permanently.

for some people its not about how much sound comes threw. its about the principal that it does at all. would it make me not buy the car? hell no. Its something i wouldn't be proud about though.

While on this topic. I find BMW turbo engines to be some of the least impressive sound wise. even those M5s dont sound that great IMO. AMG does a much better job. even a GTR sounds better.

There is nothing wrong with using mufflers, pipes resonators to enhance sound but they have crosses the line with digital enhancement. If your girlfriend wears a shirt and girdle that makes her look good in a picture that is one thing once you start photoshopping you've crossed the line. I don't care if the make a ford focus sound like a boss 302 with speakers but I'm paying big bucks for the ultimate driving machine and at these prices we should get the real deal or at the very least not have to tear the car apart and buy another exhaust system so we don't feel like plastic posers in our M car.

So what's next for you guys that are chugging the kool-aid? Fake tire screeching when you go around a corner? PS3 steering wheel bumps in place of feedback?

Simple as that!

Precisely!

I've put 500 miles on an F10 on the Autobahn at full tilt. It definitely sounds artificial.

Better would be not at all.

Completely agree. Also, most of the people complaining will never buy the car anyway. You see the guy w/ the '02 Civic saying he was about to pull the trigger on a new M3/M4 until he found out it had active sound and will now look elsewhere...come on...
This made me lol I agree with everyone that's says most of these people will not or cant buy a m3/m4

I have yet to understand why ANY artificial or amplified sound is necessary.

I think it is more like breast implants, and I'm good with that when done properly.

And snobs that feel superior because they can afford a BMW. Maybe you guys should move up to Porsche? I'm sure there are plenty of guys here who moved from a Civic or other less expensive brand to a BMW. The point you still don't get is why would you pay 70k for something fake?

Would you guys be ok with fake Brembo covers on your calipers? From this discussion it seems like you would be fine with it too.

This is the best analogy... They look good but don't feel the same! Enhanced can sound good but it's not the same.

This is textbook example of a slippery slope fallacy.

I'm not for banning or repressing topics on a car board. Don't take a car board that seriously. There's nothing wrong with chatting about exhaust and engine sound.

Slope example: Acoustic guitars => electric guitars => blasphemy?

Megaphone => PA system => blasphemy?

I wonder if the enhancement to the sound changes on the convertible based on whether the top is up or down.

Sad what BMW has become. If it's just 3% why put it in the first place? I call major bs.

So now we can code in Ferrari engine sounds or maybe Lamborghini?
