M3 is dead (2nd go around)

So...I had a 2011 E90 M3 that my dealer kept for over 7 months due to a transmission issue where the car (DCT) would go into neutral at random times. The dealer could never figure out the issue despite replicating it on at least one occasion but never did anything on the repair side (long, long, long story). After telling me that they could not find anything wrong and that I needed to pick up the car, I decided to trade it for a '17 M3 in hopes that the newer model would be more reliable. I should mention that I absolutely loved my e90 and still wish I had it in my garage. Nevertheless, I moved on and have now had the new M3 for about 15 months. On my way home from work tonight, I was merging onto traffic and as the transmission up shifted from 1st to 2nd (in auto mode, Sport + tranny and throttle settings) I heard a loud "boom", felt the car buck and then nothing...I was still in drive mode but no power to the wheels, only a loud screeching sound and what sounded like 15 lbs of marbles running around in the tranny. Smelt like hell too. My guess is the clutches went "boom" but that's only a guess. I also think the entire tranny is toast given the sound of the materials running around in there and the multitude of gears and technological items in the case. Anyone else with this issue and if so, what was the outcome and timing of the repair?

Sounds like you have shit luck. Did you throw 9,000 error codes/CEL?

Was your car new? Weird. I’m at 30k and had no issues.

That's the funny thing, no error codes whatsoever. No mods so I'm not necessarily worried about a warranty issue although I'm somewhat worried given my prior experience with my prior M3. I've also never launched the car.

What are you worried about? No mods to worry about voiding your warranty, your SA will just have to open up a PUMA case and a BWM NA tech will come by the Center to upload the FASTA data to AG.

The likelihood of snapping an axle on the street using normal street tires at stock power levels is nearly 0.

Just get a manual for your next car and you should be good to go.

Sorry to hear it OP. Without any knowledge of what's going on, kind of premature for me to comment on your case.

I have one of the earliest m3s - I took delivery August 22, 2014. You'd think mine would be one most prone to problems (though the f8x platform has been incredibly reliable). But even so, I'm at 40k miles now and it's needed nothing.

Good luck to you - the platform is a solid vehicle.

You snapped an F8x M3/M4 axle on the street?

putting wider tires in the rear can potentially cause the axles to snap, especially when you're launching at high RPMs

or if you're launching and letting the rear skip and hop!

Yes sir I messed around too much and it went boom -- I must add it was after a rear end accident and I didn't repair it at that time

Turns out the bond between the drive shaft (DS) and the metal joint attached to the rear of the DS snapped causing the DS to just spin freely. The loud boom sound was the joint breaking and the screeching sound was the friction of the DS spinning around the metal joint. New DS has to be sent from Germany so it'll be a few weeks before I'm back up and running.
