Winter tires for 19" rims

What are you doing for your winter set up? IM stuck between the Pirelli sotozeros which will fit the staggered 255/275 and act as a good performance tire when its not snowing, and hakkapeliitta r2 which is 255 all around.

I had R2s in the past that were great in the snow, but not sure how the car will drive with the smaller tires on the back.

There is also a big price difference with the R2s being 1600 and Pirelli @ 2600.

I need winters mainly for whistler trips a few times this winter, and lots of drives up cypress for frequent snowboarding.

Any thoughts or experiences?

I drove couple seasons in 255/35R19 square set up on Blizzaks and the drive is fine. I didn't notice any issues, however, I was also not driving like a maniac either (not saying that you would... hehe )

So, I think a square set up will be fine. Plus I have used Hakka's before and them are some great winter tires!!

Just my 2 pennies...

Cheers.

Well what ever Im going to give the Michelins a shot. Seems they have a slightly better review for wet/dry driving compared to the R2s which will account for more of my winter driving.

Better dry pavement performance. Which is 90% of the winter where I am.

This is partly why I went with them. Hakka's would be overkill for me given where I live.

I went to kal tire to order the Michelin 255 for the 19" rims and they said they are meant for a 9" rim max, and because it could take an extra 30 min or so to fit them on my 10" its business they wouldnt even want. He is recommending I get replica 18" rims and tires, or the Pirelli tire that fit.

Anyone hearing something similar?

That makes sense. 255 would be a bit stretched on a 10" rim.

My tire guy was able to fit 255s on stock E92 ZCP rims which are 10" wide. And 235s on the 9" fronts.

It's certainly doable but the tires are a slightly stretched.

Tire Rack has Alpins in 285/35/19. Do you think those will be too meaty for the rears?

Go to Costco, and order 4 tires from them but don't let them install it. Take your tires over to Performance One in Richmond and have to mount and balance them.

Costco got the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 255/35/19 for $389.99 each and you get $70 off for a set of 4 right now. If you don't have a Costco membership, I can help you if you like.

Generous off and thanks. I do have a Costco card so I'll give this some more thought. Honestly though I'm a bit worried about the result of the fit, and I'm also giving more serious thought to buying replica 18" BMW rims and having a proper 255 fit all around. That said arent the 18" rims for the F8x offset as well with the same tire sizes?

Finding 18" replicas to fit is going be tough. You need an 18" that will clear the calipers which limits your options. Best best is the BBS SR or the equivalent replica version. Tires would be 255/40/18

schnell325 is running 255 winter tires all around on oem front and rear wheels. The 18" 513M are also staggered, and the same width (9" front and 10" rear) as the 19" 403M.

The 18" 640M and 19" 641M are also staggered, but they are 8.5" front and 9" rear. BMW recommends the use of 255 tires all around.

If I was in the market for winter tires for my M car, I would buy the BMW winter wheel set and a set of Michelin Alpine. Doesn't make sense to keep mounting and dismounting tires each year. Unless you are going aftermarket summer wheels like BBS or HRE.

I thought about that as well, had the shop mount and test fit it on the car. It looked too small IMHO. Went with 19's instead.

I ordered the Pirellis for $2,417 installed from Kal Tire. Since 95% of my driving will not be on snow and the dry performance reviews seem pretty solid figured ill give them a try. if im not happy ill buy rims and more dedicated snow tires next go around.
