pretty simple:

give the newest video a listen (or listen again, if you alredy did!)
http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=670364

and vote! does that engine sound more like an inline 6 or a V6?

i'm surprised i haven't seen anyone post a poll about this yet

It is not really possible to know what engine it is from the sound, and it is even less possible from the quality of the vids, even if this time is it much better. And as I said in the other thread, it is even more hard to distinguish between and I6 and a smooth 90° V6, and even more, both being turbocharged. If I think the M3 F80 has a V6 it is not because of the sound.

In the latest Roundel: According to an Auto Express interview with Friedrich Nitschke, managing director of M GmbH, it will be a tri-turbocharged 3.3 liter inline six with approximately 450 HP. This seems to be the closest thing to a confirmation settling this whole V6 vs. I6 mystery that I've seen yet.

To me it sounds too much like the n54 or N55 I6 to be a V-6.

Strictly speaking, that's Auto Express's guess. BMW M executives are very tight-lipped on the matter.

Best regards,

If it's a V6 I wonder if it will be based on the M5 V8. This could be scaled down to a 3.3 V6. That would mean minimum 450bhp and if the next M3 is lighter too it will def be a winner. Who knows. Time will tell.

Of course it doesn't sound like a naturally aspirated inline 6... IT SOUNDS LIKE A TURBOCHARGED INLINE 6. A V6 engine is more guttural and it being turbo'ed doesn't significantly change its sound characteristics whereas an inline 6, N/A or FI, is more high pitched as evident from the N54 and the engine sound heard in the video.

I'm sure glad you said this and said it early so I did not have to.

I can only get once re:
Basically, I do not trust the M-GmbH anyone anymore! Ask five people there and you get 10 different answers.

But there are increasing indications that it is indeed a 3.0 inline-6. Based on the N55 in the 335i.
However, 75% of the parts of his engine developments. Starting with a reinforced crankcase, through another cylinder head, other connecting rods, bearings and pistons, to a modified ignition sequence.
As I said, rumors say that!

It is interesting but at present, that the F80 almost finished well ahead of the market as early as spring 2013 to bring, but only in Geneva 2014th
This is a marketing decision by the board, because you still want to beat the E92/93-M3 profit as long as it goes.

We will have to wait and see, but I think it would be a terrible marketing idea to have the M3 engine the exact same displacement and configuration as the 335 engine. I would be surprised if it is a 3.0L anything. I think a lot of potential M3/4 owners would be very disappointed if the engine is that similar to the non-M engines. I know that if it comes out as a massaged N55 3.0L engine, I'll probably be looking at an e92.

I agree. It is not an M5, but an M3, and every M3 had a special engine in its way, even if except the S65, they were all based on BMW AG engines.

I don't like the sound much. If it is an inline 6, the sound still needs work.

I also get the feeling the rev range is lower than what we are used to, maybe that is part of the problem.
