Break in service done early
I dropped off my 2017 F80 at the stealer on yesterday to take care of a few issues I had during delivery last month. My car had 309 miles when I dropped it off.
They needed to take my car to service to look after one of the issues and for some reason they decided to do my 1,200 miles break in service. I did not request them to do the break in service; the stealer decided to do it themselves claiming that I was "within" the window to get it sone. After reading the many reports of metal fillings found when replacing the diff. fluid, I was going to wait till I hit 1,200 miles to get this service done. I see 2 options here. First would be to let it go and hope that the rear diff and engine at decently broken it at 309 miles. Second would be for me to request the dealer to redo the service once I hit 1,200 miles. I'm leaning? towards option 2. Just wonder what others opinions are? I'll be headed to the stealer tomorrow to pick up my car. |

I don't have the technical insights, but if needed for your own piece of mind go for it. No issue for you other than time, and you can follow break in guides thru 1200 miles then.

That sounds way too early to me. Seems like your service advisor did not have your car's best interest in mind, he had his best interest in mind. I would ask to see literature stating that it is okay to do the 1200 mile break in at 309 miles. I doubt they will be able to produce that information because I doubt it exists, that is why it is called a 1200 mile service. If I am not mistaken, and maybe I am, it has a different type of fluid in rear diff when it leaves the factory. Others will chime in hopefully.

I had my car booked in for the 2000km run in service and on the day was 100km short. The advisors say there is a 100km window where it can still be done otherwise they would not be able to carry it out until I hit the correct mileage ie go for a long drive and come back to us once your done. I would be getting them to carry the service out properly when you do hit 1200

Doesn't the diff, DCT and engine have break-in oil that is different from the regular oils used? A normal 3 series does not have a 1200 mile break in service, but the fact that an M does shows that it's required. If it was not required, i would think BMW would just not do it.

I think you will be fine. I did mine at about 800 miles. I think the best route would just have them do it again at 1200 miles.

i picked up my car last sat. morning from the stealer. brought up my concern with the break-in service being done prematurely with my sales rep. he said the break-in service just needs to be done before 1200 miles and that ppl have not done it an voided their warranties. nonetheless, he brought the issue up with his sales manager and they agreed to redo the break-in service at 1200 miles. there was no resistance from them. i must admit, I'm quite happy with the customer care I've received from sales rep.

That seems odd... I'd take it to a different shop at 1,200 and ask for it to be repeated.
My dealer pulled mine ahead 250 miles early... so I was at like 950 miles so I didn't have a problem with it - if they thought it was ok, I didn't think another week of driving was going to make a difference. I still drove it as if I was in the break in period until about 1,200, and now I'm starting to slowly add more power and more aggressive throttle. I woudn't drive it like the service is done... and then repeat it |

700 Mile Break in
The stealer also broke mine in at 700 miles without telling me, notifying me it was done or anything when I had taken it in to get the alignment fixed.
I complained to BMW NA and awaiting to see what they say. I hate the two dealerships I've encountered here. Attitudes change completely once they've sold you the car. |

Is it fine to do the break in service at 1000 miles as i have an apt this Friday and will not touch 1200 before then or should i move it to next week, personally i wanted to do it past 1100 miles and more closer to the 1200 number

i personally like to err on the side of caution and would probably wait till i got closer to 1200 miles. im sire others have different opinions on this. to be honest, the way your break in your vehicle is equally as important as how long you do it for. there are many debates on the appropriate break in procedure as well. |
