Brakes after track day feel different
So after my second track day my brakes feel different. Looking for input. I did a lot of high speed stops- 100mph - 15 mph. I did not abuse the brakes, but i was racing, i tried to take it easy on them. A couple times while on track, when the brakes were cold and I was braking hard, it made a high pitched squeak, but after a few laps, no more high pitched squeak.
Now when i apply the brakes during regular driving, it grabs and then feels like it releases,as if the rotors were warped. Could I have warped them? They make a little noise now, not squeaking, more like a low pitched sound, not grinding either. Running stock pads and rotors. Any suggestions? |

I'm sure that there are some instructions for bedding pads somewhere online like on stoptech's website. When I had stock pads and had deposits after track days I would do ~6 hard stops from 80mph to 20mph on cold pads to try to get the old deposits off. Just make sure that you don't come to a complete stop and that you drive for a bit to cool off the brakes before reapplying them and coming to a stop.

Just got doing some, it worked 60-10mph. Brakes are much better! Not completely back to normal but 90% better, probably need to do it again. I went someplace off the beaten path with no traffic and no cops....so i thought. Lady cop let me know she was not pleased with my driving. She was a cute cop, let me go to. Sweet! Thanks partner!

If its minor shaking/vibrations it should go away with normal daily driving. Glad to hear it worked |

Turns out rebedding did not fix it. I have warped rotors.
I was doing a track day at california speedway, the roval. I did not abuse the brakes, i did not experience any fade. I was pushing the brakes at about 90% i would estimate. I am not an experienced racer, however, I am disappointed the brakes did not hold up. Anybody else warping their rotors after tracking? I did a track day at big willow with no brake issues. I realize big willow is not as hard on the brakes as california speedway. |

what pads are you using?
if you're continuing to use the stock pads its likely just the pads again and not warped rotors. go read the stoptech article on warped rotors. they pretty much claim there is no such thing. |

Dealership said they were warped. I never put water on hot rotors. I tried the rebedding, it made it worse, so i took it in to the dealership. Will race pads eliminate excess heat?

Screw the warped rotors, tell us more about the cute lady cop you met in the back woods somewhere. What was she wearing? Did she have to take you into custody and rough you up a bit?

CCB components are stupid expensive, and BMW claims that they should "last lifetime of the car" have proven to be false. So, CCB's are excluded from the maintenance plan. They don't wear "prematurely". They just wear. All brakes components do, quicker under some (track) conditions than others (parked). Steel components are cheaper, and thus are covered. At least for one replacement cycle. No surprises here. a

I did California Speedway last Saturday and now I've got the same problem. Beginner group using the brakes about 80-90% for two 20 min session. No vibration, just that low pitched hum. Besides OP with warped rotors, it seems like this is pretty normal and eventually go away? I've got about 150 miles on it since.
Thanks in advance. |

The "hum" you hear is also the result of heavy pad deposit. If you are not getting vibrations or shudder, that means the pad deposit has been evenly smeared (good for you ) and will eventually wear off with extended street use (read several weeks).

For what it's worth. I've been in contact with OP and the dealer did tell him he had warped rotors. I find that extremely hard to believe but they replaced em anyway. |

I had a long conversation on the topic with my service manager (he is a very good guy and I am in very good terms with him ). Not many people know about un-even pad deposits, even most shop techs/managers. I showed him the StopTech article and he found it very interesting. He was himself very surprised that people could warp the massive rotors found on ///M cars. All the symptoms are almost identical to warped rotors up to the disc run-out being out of spec. Since BMW allow the replacement of rotors when those symptoms are confirmed, he did not seek to understand any further. Further, if a customer showed up at a dealer complaining about brake shudder and the dealer would send him home saying that it will eventually go away in several weeks, imagine the public relations issues...

the only way is a rapid cool down on rotor, ie drop them in water. Metal does not warp with a gradual cool down. and like everyone had pointed out, there is not such thing as warped rotors due to excessive braking, never heat the brakes up then come to a complete stop and hold the pads in one section. always leave room to keep the rotors spinning
