I'd like to, but cannot find any picture of those black wheels with Das Marina Blue....

Buying an F80 next year - ZCP or no?
Hello! I currently have a 2016 328i 6MT that I've added some modifications to (see signature) but have talked some sense into myself and decided to go with an F80 6MT towards next summer. I'll be looking at a pretty loaded M3 (exec pkg which I further assume with have the adaptive full LEDs come 2018), full leather, etc but keep going back and forth between the standard version and the ZCP. A little background about me: I'll be using the car as a daily driver (10 miles each way to the office), family vehicle (will be getting married just prior to the purchase but no kids for a year or so we are thinking), and HPDE instrument (I've been to 5 total weekend events - 2 in my current F30, and the others in my previous car, an ATS).
While I have tuned and upgraded various components in my current F30 I do not *plan* to do any of those upgrades in my future F80. I'll probably do some strategic carbon fiber pieces but that's about it. So here are my questions regarding the standard M3 vs the ZCP M3 1) Sound. In watching a few videos on YouTube I've heard that the exhaust sound is a bit different (better). What's the consensus on this? Also, wasn't the sound that many complained about addressed even on the standard version for 2017/18? My only frame of reference on the sound is a friend's 2015 M3 6MT. 2) Ride quality. With the adaptive suspension being standard on the base M3 now, is the only difference now between how firm the ZCP becomes in Sport and Sport+ modes. The 20" wheels on the ZCP do give me a little pause as to ride quality. The cost is not a huge concern, however, I am thinking for almost the same price as the ZCP package I could do Individual Ferrari Red. Looking forward to any and all discussion from owners and enthusiasts on this!

1) The sound is most definitely improved and I think the burbles sound great in the ZCP. They sound WAY better in person and video's don't do them justice. If you plan on upgrading your exhaust down the road it will sound even that much better.
2) The ride is what the ride is as its a sport sedan. The M3/4 isn't the softest ride to begin with, even in Comfort. I don't think there would be a big difference in the overall comfort of the ride between the two. I haven't personally driven a ZCP so I can't really speak to that. I have the EDC suspension and I really think it rides well. The ZCP is well worth the upgrade IMO. Even if you have to sacrifice an individual color. I'm actually considering trading in my 2016 non-ZCP f82 and ordering a 2018 ZCP. They addressed a lot of the things that fell short in the base f80's and I since I'm planning on keeping the car for quite sometime that it's worth the investment.

Great info! Thanks! So what exactly was improved going from a first year standard car to '17 ZCP?

OP, there is a wealth of information on the differences between ZCP and non-ZCP exhaust and suspension. You could start with a search like this:

Without a doubt standard.
Wait .... no, ZCP! Definitely ZCP. Yeah, ZCP. Of course there is standard, which there's a lot to said for. It's not a bad option, really. On the other hand the ZCP is available too, so you could go that way. My point is, when you boil it down, the choice is pretty obvious. |

The 20" wheels do not affect ride quality.
Even if it did a human would not be able to tell the difference. The tire choice affects the ride infinitely more. |

I have owned both a 2016 M3 6 speed manual and then upgraded to a 2017 M3 ZCP 6 speed manual. Hands down, you want the ZCP. They made so many little changes and it completely transformed the car.
The power delivery is smoother and more linear. The car handles much better. It sounds better. It puts the power down exiting corners FAR better and with less drama than the standard car. The 20's look fantastic and do not affect the ride. The seats are deeper and more comfortable. The black badging and striped seat belts are nice touches. All in all a far more refined mature driving car. |

I need clarity on something. The 2018 ZCP package comes with the M-Sport exhaust, but why are the tips black chrome instead of the carbon fiber ones that come on the $8000 M Performance exhaust?
Are these two separate exhausts with the one in the ZCP package being a lesser version? If they're the same, why would they downgrade the tips from carbon fiber to black chrome?!

Then comes the MPE which is better than the Sports/Stock Exhaust and you have to buy the Carbon Fiber or Titanium Exhaust Tips separately by the way so you one must consider the price of the M Performance Exhaust AND the tips for the complete package

I just went from a 2016 non-zcp to a 2018 zcp M4 and there are noticeable differences everywhere, as described, and in a good way. I feel like the M3/4 should have came this way in the beginning but looking back, the 2016 sure seems inferior in all aspects to the 2018 zcp. it's just so much smoother and refined. it's hard to describe to someone who hasn't had a significant amount of wheel time behind both. To sum it all up, I wouldn't buy this car without the competition package knowing what I know now, especially if money isn't a big factor. P.S. I really like the new black 666M wheels. I came from the black 437M wheels and they look and feel like a significant upgrade. To each their own of course... |

Yes a zcp is harsher than a non zcp. But not because of the wheels. My 18" rs4s are much harsher than the 20" PSS. |
