Clunking sound on the 1-2 shift w/ the 6MT
Has anyone else experienced this? I only get it on the 1-2 shift, and it seems when the car's cold (i.e. just getting going) I get it even more. When I make the shift from 1st to 2nd gear I get a very loud clunk sound that I can even feel under my seat. It's almost like I'm forcing the car into gear without depressing the clutch (no grinding though), but I've got the clutch fully down.
I've never experienced this is any other car I've had and don't get it in any other gear changes besides the 1-2 shift. For reference, I've been driving MTs for 15 years now across 7 different cars and I've never had this issue before the F80. |

I occasionally get this when cold, but from 3rd to 4th. Only once in a while, and I don't think it sounds as severe as yours. I can only detect it through the shifter...don't feel it through the clutch.

Sounds like the normal driveshaft lash many others have reported. It's carbon fiber, hollow, and very light. When disengaging the clutch out of 1st gear is when you'll notice it the most.

Driveline clunk has been a signature quirk on all 3 BMW manuals I've owned. It's possible to get better at it so it doesn't clunk, but it's definitely different than other cars.

Yes, there is another thread about this somewhere and I believe that describes it as a "rattle" but I've always thought it was more of a "clunk".
Apparently it's 100% normal for a high performance car to do this. As I was driving out of the welt, it felt like I was drive a 86 Toyota 4x4 pick up. I also thought I got a lemon lol |

Keen to hear other 6MT owners reports. Also does the rev match feature apply on the up shifts too? My old 370z had this and it made quick up shifts so smooth. |

My '15 did it and now my '16 does it as well. The e92 even did it so either all 3 cars were/are jacked or its normal. I'd say don't worry about it

Thanks to everyone for the replies. Sounds like everyone's on the same page as seeing this as normal. I'll just add it to the list of "normal" sounds the car makes, just after the horrible screeching the brakes sometimes make when something gets caught between the rotor and the guard, the rattles I get throughout the interior, and the loud farts of the exhaust on heavy throttle when cold. I'm not complaining...still love the car overall.

+1 lots of unusual sounds on my 16' with <500 miles. Hoping it is just a combination of new car paranoia and my amateur (but improving) manual transmission driving.

Not sure if this is normal on a M3 but...
Whenever I'm driving at low speed on 1st or 2nd gear and I step on the clutch fast I hear that something may be loose in the transmission. The car has only 500 miles now. Has anyone one experienced this issue before?

When you say "drop the clutch" do you mean step on the clutch to disengage it quickly? If so what you are hearing is just drivetrain lash. You are going from engine braking to none very suddenly so the engine and transmission mounts are unloading very quickly. it makes things jostle around a bit.
To avoid that try disengaging the clutch slower.

My mistake , whenever I STEP on the clutch. Thank you for the reply The funny thing is I have driven probably 100s of manual cars and this is the first one that makes that type of noise.

Yes it's normal according to the dealer. I think it's known as the 'M clunk'. Apparently all manual M cars make this noise. It's audible when you're driving slowly in 1st gear and u press on the clutch. I'm curious to see if anyone on here with a 6mt doesn't have this.
