E92 now or wait for F80 next year?

I have an opportunity to pick up a new 2013 M3 coupe in a month or so for a good price. I drove the car, love the sound of the engine and how it drives in general. Granted since I drive 3.30ci now - I may not be able to properly judge M3 given the gap between two cars - I just know it felt great.

I know it is ultimately personal preference but I wonder what people think - is it worth waiting for at least a year - and probably 18 months for 2014 M3 with better/more fuel efficient engine or just buy 2013 M3 now.

Two big pluses I see in 2014 M3 are fuel efficiency and four doors (this will be daily driver and I have kids). It will also remain "latest generation" for a while. Getting first year model worries me though.

Another option is to lease 2013 M3 and get 2016 M3 when lease is up. Clearly it is a more expensive proposition.

The car will be mainly used for daily driving with little if any tracking. No mods are planned.

Any thoughts?

No one really can answer that question since there is no F30 M3 to compare against, and another unknown is the cost.

My pure speculation is that it'll get softer (as it's been the case with all the new generation M models like the M5/M6) but faster due to a slight increase in power and more electronic wizardry.

If you like the S65 (V8) NA engine and hydraulic handling of the current generation, I would get the E92 M3 now (and I am following my own advice and picking up my second E9x M3 next month).

If you're the type that needs to drive the latest gen and value specs above all else, waiting for the F80 M3 is probably your best bet.

It sounds like you have a sedan right now and make good use of it. I suspect you would eventually regret giving up the rear doors.

If the choice were between the F80 and F82 today, which would you choose? There's your answer on how to proceed. Don't buy the wrong car just because its available today.

Actually I drive 3.30ci which is a coupe. I do find having to put kids in the back mildly annoying though I am used to it now. Also as they grow - it gets easier.

If I had a choice I would buy sedan but I am OK with coupe since I like the looks.

My mistake, I missed the "c". Never seen it written with a decimal point either, FWIW.

In general, I would still say that you should determine whether you would prefer a sedan or coupe, all else being equal, before making a decision. If you ultimately decide that you want a sedan, seek out an E90 now, or wait for the F80. If you instead can live with the coupe for another N years, then buy the E92 or wait for the F82.

As for whether you should buy now or wait, well, I wouldn't consider fuel economy at all since the savings are likely to be a small fraction (5% or so, I'd guess) of what you are spending overall. It comes down to what matters most to you - having the S65 or having the latest model with the latest features and technology.

Range is a very important factor not to be ignored when it comes to fuel efficiency. Being able to do 400+ miles on a tank, or at least more than 200 in the city really aids the driving experience for me (it's one of the very few faults I have with the current gen).

aoysgelt- the E92 M3 you test drove did not just seem great because you have a 330ci. It still remains the segment leader to this day, it really is a special car.

True enough. But, will we see a large enough improvement in fuel economy to yield a significant enough range improvement to make it worth serious consideration? I am expecting an average of about 20 MPG compared to around 16-17 MPG today that people see in mixed driving. Probably the same size tank too. So that's 15 to 20% fewer stops. Not bad I suppose. I highly doubt we'll see 400+ miles on a tank (> 33% improvement from today).

Good post. I think (or maybe I should say hope!) on a long highway run close to 30 may be realized on the new one. I know even with my now gone M5 I could empty the tank in 90 miles or get as much as 320 and that's with the very tight 7th gear the S85/65 drivetrains employ. Certainly will be interesting to see how real world economy ends up when not racing around. Interesting to hear about the fuel tank, so the F30 has the same size as the E90(I have not looked this up)? That's slightly disappointing I was hoping for a 5-10 liter increase given the larger dimensions (though of course all of these things are behind the main purchasing factors such as drivability etc).

Possible. I still think averages are going to be around 20 MPG.

To the best of my knowledge both the E90 and F30 have 60L capacity.

I just bought my e92 and plan to keep it for awhile. I love it and enjoy driving it *now*. Thanks to government regulations, we really won't see cars like this anymore. I really don't want erratic turbos or electronic steering. Also will the new Ms use direct injection engines? If so, i'll sure as hell pass on degrading performance and increased maintenance due to carbon build up.

^This is the answer to your question. It's why I have an F30 and not the E92 335is that I lusted over.

That said, I have no regrets...and my family still loves me.

as much as I like the current V8, I think you will regret getting the e92 once the f80/82 comes out lol; you'll feel your car is outdated in short time and wish you had gotten the new model and look new for the next 5-6 years.

I had the option to get the new 2012 facelift C63 when it came out, but I chose to buy the 2011 brand new because the old look is so much more aggressive. After 6 months, I regret it because once you see all the new models around the streets, the old one really looks outdated although it's not really.

I could get the E93 right now its hot as s***, but I ll just wait until 2015 for the F83 and look new until 2022 if the world still exist by then

I am in the *exact* same boat.
Kids, on the fence with e92 M3 vs F80/82 M3, want to push the button with zero regrets...

I think you should wait for the F80.

Your kids will thank you, as they get older they'll really hate getting in the backseat. The unknowns are the price, mpg, and reliability. I think BMW will blow those away (although quality may take a hit).

The current M3 is a gas guzzler, hence the gas guzzler tax. Also, someone put it the range is also much less, which is important (main reason why I envy the 328i people).

I'm in the same boat so I really do feel your pain..
I was set on a 3 year lease for the e92 m3 starting august (sold my dinan m3 a couple years ago.. biggest regret yet) and getting the m4 after but I realized by then I might want to wait for the LCI's to come out.. and I'd have nothing to drive in between the end of my lease and when the LCI releases.. now I can't even decide what I want anymore because of this situation.. the S65 is amazing and I still don't know how good (as much as I love how the m4 looks) the next gen m4 will be.. all while not having anything to drive in between the end of my lease until the LCI's.. the timing is horrible..

I was going to buy 2013 M3 but was having a real hard time with the above stated issues. Thought about the last year of the V8 also. But I knew if I bought the old body style I would hate it when the new ones come out. Picked up a AH3 M sport and love it. But it left open the option of me getting the M3 or M4 when they are available.
It's a hard choice to buy old Tech when you know fancy and new is right around the corner. But I will miss the roar of that V8. But I do thing the AH3 in ECO Boost is a nice middle car between the 335 and the new M3.

Best of luck with your decisions. It was hard for me not to buy the M with V8. But I saved so much on Ah3 it made things ok.

I had the same choice and I scrambled to get my E92 before they were all gone. I just had to have that NA V8 and wasn't interested in the new engine.
