For Production the first car to demonstrate this engine will be the X3 M.

Power output will be around the 450BHP mark. As this gives M to play around with further M3 models in the future of the F32 Platform.
Any M3 will continue with the same philosophy. It is not about Power and outright speed. It is about advancing the game in technology , lightness and remaining the best driving car in it's segment. It will continue to do what the E92 has done since 2007. Take on allcomers including new more powerful models such as the C63 AMG Coupe and Audi RS5 and still outdrive them.

Quote:
1. the sedan will be a 3 series
2. the coupe will be a 4 series
3. the coupe will be a m3 even though it's a 4 series
4. there is no sedan m3...but magically there it is
1. Yes the sedan/touring remains the 3er
2. Yes the Coupe/Cabrio in light of moving upmarket will be renamed 4er.
3. BMW M. Is a sub-brand of BMW as is BMWi. BMWi has stand alone products that do not crossover with a BMW. i3 for example has nothing to do with a 3er. If you take M for example. M takes the car away from it's BMW routes and completely transforms the way it drives and handles that it becomes an individual product. That is the idea for M and M3 and further signifies that M is a sub-brand within BMW with it's own products.
4. This car is using the Coupe chassis because Coupe's are not ready for public testing.

isnt this an M3 sedan??
anyway, I do like what I see so far!! Looks like a really strong M3!
But I really want to know how the Tri-Turbo works...
Is it for power, fuel efficient, or both??

Oh yeah, sorry.. I was getting 24mpg on freeway driving, so that's what I was remembering. I don't know why EPA ratings are so off the scale anyways...

so i dont get this - why are we seeing testing of a car not due out for 3 yrs, but not testing of the f32/33 3er thats soon to follow the 3er sedan? this all just seems so premature who knows what theyre trying to actually accomplish here ...

- Virtual zero turbo lag. Your talking full spooling in only a few hundreds milliseconds, packaging flexibility [e.g. plumbing], ECU controlled boost levels.

You'll start seeing these show up a lot as the tech improves. Mazda is rumored to release their 2013 RX-7 with electric turbo[s].

+1. And if they make it to where the HPFP is a direct swap to the N54, that would be awesome. Imagine a higher output HPFP from M3 be a direct swap in the N54. That might solve the fueling limitation for N54s.

... I know I know: just day dreaming here...

Very interesting indeed. I do hope they keep the 4 door as an option.

That's the beauty of an electric turbo, the plumbing is a bit different - you can do things like separate the turbine from the compressor.

So when will we see the X3M? Late 2012 as a 2013 model? Then the m3 would come out in early 2014 as a 2015 model? That would give BMW 18 months of testing the new engine in real world conditions.

Brakes are clearly some large multi piston units. However, the rotors appear to be the traditional M floating design. Although far better than a 1 piece design BMWs floaters typically do not allow much airflow since th hat blocks the vents...

To the folks comments on looks, mirrors, etc: The production M3, coupe or sedan will look nothing like this very early mule.

Again, if you push hard, both cars will get awful mpg... You will only have the benefit on freeway driving, and depending on you driving habits and commute, the new M3 may not be all that economical. It may not be justified to have 2more mpg and loose a high revving V8 masterpiece.. That's my whole point.

Agreed on M3 is not a sports car.

And 24mpg??? Mine never broke 15.
In my experience 20 mpg is not attainable at normal freeway speeds of 65-80, perhaps 55.

Come on South - share some references! Sure we trust M3post.com has better information than most of us members and even better than most magazines, blogs, etc. However, without a source it remains speculation.

This won't be how the F30 M3 will look like. I mean there's not even a hood bulge.
