Who cares what it sounds. I never understood people who buy an exhaust for the sound, reminds me of the ricers with their huge exhaust pipes on their Honda. Sounds cool bro, but you just killed the torque.
The thrill of 406lb/ft is all that really matters. |

I hate to say it, but I'm in the camp of "that sounds terrible." My 335is exhaust was awesome -- I'm hoping BMW comes out with an upgraded exhaust option more similar to the 335is sound than this video. The engine note on my s65 is great, but the factory exhaust on it honestly leaves little to be desired as well.
I'll wait to pass final judgement until I hear it in person, but I think the aftermarket exhaust companies are going to have plenty of business. |

This SOUNDS like an E46 M3...all in line six M3s have this raspy, lawnmower sound. Does it sound as good as the S65? No, but does any 6 cylinder sound as good as a V8? No...

I drove an E46 M3 three weeks ago. The car had supersrprint race and it was really awesome. But it surely didn't sound as good and as exotic as the E9x S65...
If you only focus on the sound of the car keep your S65 V8... But if the gap of driving dynamic is as significant as it is between the E46 vs E92, you won't go back... Even if the S65 sound better. It really depends on what you are expecting of a M3. I ordered a F80 and I am the first to say I will miss the V8 sound. But I am sure that everything else on this new M3/M4 will be significantly better than the E9x.

LOVE IT.
it sounds sort of like my 135is, but a bit raspier. Doesn't pop as much as the 135is, but that might take some breaking in. |

It's not that people are necessarily comparing it to the V8. There are plenty of good sounding 6 cylinders out there. This M4 isn't on that list.
If BMW could make this sound less like a lawn mower people would be more inclined to like it. But come on, it's awful. |

Here is a crappy closeup iphone video of a Ghibli S exhaust (also a 6er) That just sounds SO MUCH BETTER to me that I know I don't need to wait to hear the m3/m4 in person to come to the realization that I don't like the way it sounds. My 335i with the BMW Performance Exhaust sounded WAY better than the current m3 vids that are available too, and that is a bit sad. . . No reason it doesn't sound better that was a twin scroll turbo i6 which *should [I may get shot for saying this] be similar enough. . .

The car isn't even warmed up yet, or in sport mode.

It sort of sounds like it has a "buzz" to it? I'm not sure what I expected, but that wasn't it...

Is someone cutting the grass?
The M3 didn't have an exhaust note. It was too subdued. The aftermarket took care of that though. |
