Does anyone have an opinion on whether 0w30 or 5w30 is better for our cars in warmer (50F+) climates?
Either grade of oil will be suitable for any climate. However, if you drive your car a little hard I would recommend going with an LL-01 oil (the bmw branded 5w30 in this case) over the 0w30 which is LL-01FE and has a lower hths. There are also plenty of readily available LL-01 oils outside of the dealership offerings if you so choose.

Did a bit more digging as well and found the Redline 5w40:

Does anyone have experience?

I ran Redline in my last oil change but I used 5W-30. Probably one of the top race oils for extended drain intervals. Motul 300v has a similar spec but has a tad bit less additive compared to Redline. Both have similar additive packages with high moly and zddp. Both are Group V oils with ester base stock.

I switched back to the dealer 0w-30 due to scheduled maintenance.

Redline 5w-30 definitely takes longer to get up to temperature so it may be overkill and be detrimental to wear if you have a short commute or do a lot of short distance driving.

If you are tracking, Redline or 300v is the way to go. The SOPUS GTL stuff is high quality oil as well as the base stocks are purified and perform just as well as the ester oils with their crazy low NOACK numbers in the 6-7%.

Redline is nothing special IMO and its expensive. I personally use Castrol 0w40 which can be had at walmart for around $25 for a 5qt jug. It carries the LL-01 certification as well as Mercedes, Porsche, VW, and others which makes it a very well rounded oil.

As long as the oil is LL-01 certified you are kind of splitting hairs between brands/grades.

You are fine doing that, modern oils are ok to be mixed together without adverse effects (especially if only adding a liter or so).

On another note - what do you mean by "half capacity"? Are you saying that your car only has 3.25L of oil instead of the required 6.5L (sure hope not) or that the electronic dipstick is showing at the halfway mark? If the latter, I would not recommend adding any oil as there is no reason to.

I do not recommend topping your vehicle off when the electronic dip stick is reading half.

1) it's not that accurate ( system rounds up or down to 1/4 increments) and it could say half but it's really only a 1/4 low then slipping up and pouring a little extra in accidentally isn't good.

2) depending if ground isn't perfectly level it could also be reading lower then it actually is on flat ground and again 1qt it's easy to accidentally poor extra.

The car has lots oil in the vehicle it is safe to wait till the vehicle tells you to add 1qt/1L and probably the best because you just poor the entire thing in and don't need to worry about trying to get that perfect half in.

If it comes on well driving I don't even pull over I finish to my destination if it's under a hour or about 60mi then top up but if I'm long trip I usually pull over at my next bathroom break or fuel stop.

Mobil 1 0w40 does not carry the LL-01 certification so I would not recommend it. Go with Castrol 0w40 instead.

I do not believe it carries LL-04 either but I see you are in Poland so perhaps there are different formulations there.

I would consult your owners manual or dealership for the proper certification requirements. I believe the LL-04 approval is mainly for use in the European market which has lower sulfur fuels, namely diesel.

Okay thanks!
Maybe I will choose Millers 0w40 which has LL01 norm.
