What I dont' understand: If the valves are not open at low RPM with the sport or sport +, why do you have to drive it in those modes before unplugging?

I dunno...I'm lost on that one too but sure enough you can look in the outer tail pipes and see the closed valve before and then when you shut the car off after they are open.

When I was driving on the autobahn in October I could immediately hear the exhaust note change when I toggled sport plus cruising at constant speed.

All I know is that there is a night and day difference with the mod at idle but maybe it is equivalent to having sport plus on all the time...not sure.

For me it works great because I liked the sound of sport plus, but not the elimination of the rev-match and didn't care for the twitchy throttle for daily driving. This allows me to have my cake and eat it too.

I just made another video with the help of my wife (added to original post as well). She drove, I took the videos. I trust her to drive way more than I trust her camera skills.

I think for now I should have just about every type of video covering this mod. Let me know if you can think of any other ways to show the comparison.

Added 12/20/2014: Exterior view accelerating at part throttle comparing wife's unmodded F80 and my F80 with the exhaust valve mod:

I've had this mod for about two weeks now and it is so much louder in the lower RPM regardless of the throttle mode. I do believe that the valves ARE closed when you do a cold start in Sport/Sport + mode. I also love how much louder the down shift blips are, reminds me of the E9X S65. The only thing that I don't like is that the cold start ups are so loud that it makes certain parts of the interior rattle and that 7th gear drone is annoying... I read somewhere that the drone disappears in Sport/Sport + mode for some reason so I'll try it and see...

I highly recommend this mod! Def much better sound on start up and at lower RPM. I had a really tough time getting the plugs off but once I used a flathead screwdriver bit, they came right off!

No prob! She basically drove both right out of the garage so whatever the standard mode is. The video doesn't do the difference justice but you can tell there is a difference. In person it is like a lawnmower vs a meaty big bore inline 6.

Yes, the blips are so much louder and more aggressive like the were in the E9x M3. It was one thing that I missed from my old M3... but now its back!

The car defaults in Efficient mode at start-up. It would be interesting to do the same comparo with your wife's car in Sport or Sport+.

OT, but the car looks great with the 18" 513M wheels.

I went ahead and pulled the plugs on my valves today to give it a try for a while. For some reason I had assumed the cold start loudness was coming from these valves being open for cold start but I just figured out that's not the case. If you cold start the car, and then select sport + and bump the throttle it kicks up yet another notch to volume level ludicrous. That must be what people are talking about when they mention pissing off the neighbors, lol. Anyway, loving the mod, and dying to see what some resonator tips (MPE for example) might sound like. Thanks again.

After driving for two hours last night...that drone is really getting to me....I had to blast the radio but it still was there. I really love how much more aggressive it sounds but I can't have my cake and eat it too so I'll probably plug them back in to get rid of that drone.

Also, I have updated this thread with a POLL about the drone with the MOD. Hoping to determine if there is any relation to transmission choice and drone WITH the mod done.

DCT and mine drones in 7th gear. I just never drive in auto and never leave 6th

I do admit it isn't ideal... I'm waiting for someone to build a "kill switch" for inside the cabin (like Awron but not $1,000) and THAT will be the ticket.

The DCT has a taller 7th than the MT has in 6th. Hence, the heavier drone for DCT on the highway. I have the mod on my 6MT and drone is non-existent.

When you guys are using a flat head screwdriver do you push it into the top pf the plug (i.e. nearest the underside of the car) or underneath (i.e. nearest the floor)

Im having the darnedest difficulty getting these plugs off

I just used my fingers. Pretty sure you just push downward on the tab and then pull the plug back.

These are from my video. The tab is on top of the plug. You press down on it and it unhooks from the nub on the receptacle. Helps to rock the plug left and right as you pull back and press the tab simultaneously.
