Bumper-to-bumper extended warranty worth it?
Hey guys, so i recently bought a f82 bmw m4 2015 and added an extended bumper to bumper warranty that cost 4,000 for 4 years. I was thinking about cancelling the warranty and maybe adding a few mods to my car. It has 9,000 miles on it so far; and i was basically wondering whats the reliability of the m4? Has anyone who is a long time owner experienced mechnical/engine issues or electrical issues with the car? I use the car as a daily driver and dont really race it around or drive it hard all the time. i was wondering if bumper to bumper (doesnt cover maintence cost such as brakes, oil, and etc) is really worth it. Thanks

If you added 4 years so 8 in total, there are no F80/F82/F83 old enough to compare reliability over that much time. As suggested threads above will provide some good reading for experience to date but no one will be able to tell you what happened after 6-8 years. We can only extrapolate experience to date.

Just an opinion, but one you will likely see a lot if you read the wealth of information on this forum.
You did not state if there is a mileage limit in the 4 years, but assuming you do 10K miles a year, you'll only be at 50k miles at the end of the warranty. In my opinion, you are very unlikely to rack up $4k in repairs on a F8X with 50K miles or less. 50-75K the risk increases slightly, but I think that you are still safer betting that you won't spend $4k on a repairs. My vote, turn the warranty back in and invest the $4k in whatever gives you better value than a warranty you likely won't use. Course.....I could be wrong and you could be the Murphy's Law example. One significant repair could easily pass $4k.

As long as you do proper maintenance with the fluids (oil, brake fluid etc.), never let the gas tank go below 1/4, maintain engine (spark plugs, belts etc) ,look under the hood for leaks, cracks (belts, bushings, engine mounts, trans mounts), look underneath the carriage and fix any issues you find from any of those places then you should be fine. If one neglects all those items I mentioned then there will be issues down the road with the engine, brake lines, catalytic converter, gas pump etc. Edit: Wrote it better Last edited by Takumi587; 04-13-2018 at 12:09 PM.. |

If it helps the OP I've done 70k miles in mine with zero warranty claims and BMW in the UK warranty the car for an unlimited mileage over 3 years so clearly they are confident that it will take the miles....you could easily do 150k over 3 years and they will stand by it.
I have no idea why your warranty mileage is so poor in the US? P.S the engine feels better now than at 15k it pulls like a bastard!

Here's my experience and on a different BMW generation, but after having various problem during the warranty period with my wife's 2011 335is Coupe (bought new), we bought the extended warranty about 4 months before the factory warranty expired. This was our first BMW. Here's a list of things that went wrong, both under the original factory warranty and the extended warranty. Everything that went wrong was covered in full by BMW.
Original warranty:
My wife has a 2018 M3 CP on order to replace the 335is Coupe because the warranty on that expires next month. We love that car, especially the exhaust not, but we don't want to own it out of warranty. Personally, based on our experience, I wouldn't own any BMW out of warranty, but YMMV. Edited to add: Just to clarify, this was a BMW extended warranty that extended the original warranty from 4yr./50,000 miles to 7yr./100,000 miles. It was not a 3rd party warranty. P.S. I actually do own a BMW that's out of warranty, my 2006 Z4 M Roadster. But that's an exception!

Did they actual tell you it was a “bumper to bumper” extended warranty or are those your words? Last edited by IK6SPEED; 04-14-2018 at 07:09 PM.. |

I've always been a proponent of a car warranty. It's way too easy to rack up thousands in repairs for what is often not much extra per month. Cheap insurance. I bought a used 2008 e60 M5 - six months before the warranty was going to expire it cost the warranty company $12,000. I was like, I am NOT owning this car out of warranty, That's when I leased the 2015 M4. My lease expired in March. Since my car only has 15k on the odo, I decided just to buy it and wait for the next gen. The dealer offered me a warranty that after the factory warranty expires would be good for about two additional years. $6,200!! A four year warranty - if it is really for four years, would have been a tough decision for me. At $6,200 it was easy choice! The M4 has been bullet proof for me and for the most part for everyone. I'm breaking my rule about owning an M car out of warranty, yet I think this series is solid. The thing you have to ask is, what if you need to come up with $5,000 for a repair? Sure that's ton of money, but what if?? Just my two cents.

I have much better peace of mind with a (reputable) bumper to bumper as well. My rule is it's a must if I'm still making payments.
That being said, I sold my 335is and cashed out the balance because I never had to make a claim. Didn't have one on my E46 328Ci, but the most significant issue was the torn subframe that BMW NA replaced themselves post-warranty. Did the valve cover gasket replacement myself because there wasn't a warranty fix for that anyway. |

Is the extended warranty worth it?
No matter what I do it's going to be expensive and I knew what I was getting into before I bought it.... but I feel like the dealer is really pushing it on me because of the big payout they'll get for selling it to me. I'm 24 with a used 2015 F82 at about 42k miles. This is my dream car and I want to keep it until at least 75k-100k but is the extended warranty really worth it?

if you do decide to get one let us know we blow them out for forum members. Yes they are very expensive but if you plan on keeping it way past the factory warranty then I personally think its worth it. Only takes one expensive service call to be glad you did.
IF your interested 805-482-8878 ask for Checa in Finance let her know your vin number, current miles, and most important your a forum member m-f 10-4pm any issues just shoot me a pm

What if the car has mods? Is it worth getting extended warranty then? My gut tells me its pointless if mods just void the warranty any way.

I do know that your relationship with your dealership plays a big factor in what does and doesn't void your warranty. If it's extremely modified I wouldn't even bother... If it has nothing to do with the issue at hand the dealership will look the other way (depending on relationship.)
