Iphone X vs Idrive
Whatsup Guys,
So wanted to post this to give the community a heads up or to see if anyone else has had this experience. I recently got the new Iphone X and like any other phone phone I paired it to my F80. I initially plugged it new with the USB cable and when i tried pairing it with the head unit things started to go down hill. First it would play my music and then would stop. Then it began rebooting the head unit as i was driving, It rebooted it like 15-20 times. The 20th time didnt turn out so well. Everything saved was erased with only my radio working, no navigation, satalite radio, AUX, USB. Nothing worked anymore so i let the car be and let it sit over night. Checked it first thing in the morning and same thing so i decided to take it to Crevier BMW in Santa Ana, CA and spoke with the genius guy and he performed the standard things, hard reset and stuff like that but could not figure it out so i was instructed to take in for service. This was on Saturday 12/2/2017. Took the car in and heard from them on Monday. Was advised they were trying to reinstall the software. On Wednesday I received my daily update from the service adviser and was told the new Iphone X caused the Idrive system to crash and they could not fix but since it was due to a external device which was not on the BMW's approved bluetooth device list for my M3 it was not covered under warranty. A claim was submitted with BMW North America and they approved helping me out so a new head unit was order and installed on Thursday. Picking the car up from the dealer on Saturday. So if you are planning on getting the new Iphone 8 or Iphone X do not connect to your BMW until you check if its on that list or if you already have i would like to hear your experience. Link to BMW approved bluetooth devices is below: http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...hframedin.aspx Thank you guys, IG:Siccmade93

Yeah I don't believe in this. My friend has iPhone X I never seen him with this issue.
I'm skeptical.

I think other people have been experiencing similar issues as well:

I had the same problem and ended up having the head unit replaced. i have an iphone x but the exact same thing happened with my 7.
it’s not the phone, it’s the ios. if you have any custom coding done, you’ll have to code it all back again. when you do, ask for the new idrive. i dig it. |

I'll take my statement back. I spoke with my SA and this is apparently a problem.
Not sure if this is a BMW or Apple problem.

Interesting...I think those w issues need to post their software version. I have an old one and have 0 problems thus far.
Seems if it's a compatibility issue, BMW could offer an update patch to address the issue? |

I've had a similar problem too, but it started with my iPhone 6s, and continues now with my iPhone 8 Plus. My head unit would restart randomly, music would stop randomly, sometimes BT would never connect. Definitely makes sense that it's an iOS problem.
Maybe one day I'll have my car updated and re-coded. |

Got my F80 back last night after a week and everything is good now after they replaced the head unit but my SA advised not to pair the phone or connect with the USB until its on the list because if it happens again BMW wont cover it. if i use the AUX would i be okay? since its just audio coming through? dont wanna bust out the old CD's lol

From what I been told, the 11.2 messed things up again.
I still have my M4 w/ iDrive 4, in compared to my iDrive 6 in my M3. The iDrive 4 is faster with my iPhone 7 Plus but slower in my iDrive 6. Also when playing music through iDrive, I don't have an Playlist option listed on the iDrive 6 but I see it still on my iDrive 4. It is all kinds of weird having to change my music through my phone. (iTunes playlist on the phone not Pandora etc)

I had the same issue; however, it seemed to be resolved after the following steps
1. Remove/delete the phone from my idrive 2. Restart iPhone 3. Connect to idrive again |

Hi folks,
I've got exactly the same problem. I got the phone when it was released and I've been happily using it since. However, about a week ago I experienced the first iDrive crash/reload followed by 5-6 more.. And then it settled.. until yesterday when it started doing it again. My phone was connected I've been using it for the whole day and then all of a sudden the iDrive started reseting again and again.. I took me some time until I realised it could be the phone causing it because there were no indications whatsoever but at some point I simply decided to disable the Bluetooth on the phone and crashes stopped.. It's a bit scary reading people had to replace the whole head units.. I may keep it off for time being. Both (phone and iDrive) are currently up-to-date (software wise) but apparently that's still a problem.. I got 2017 X5 and iPhone X running on 11.2.1. They don't seen to like each other :/ |

Okay, a quick update from me. It looks like I was wrong for the iPhone version. I thought I was running the latest (11.2.1) but I was on 11.1.2. Updated this morning and haven't got any issues whatsoever! So fingers crossed
