They called me today and they told me they are replacing the lifters with a new set. Or the service advisor said "that's what they want us to do"

That's good to hear. As a side note, every car that I've owned (Honda, Audi, MB) has had that ticking noise. So I always assumed it was normal.

Update on my behalf. I tried but BMW Benelux decided (rightly so?) that nothing was wrong with the engine. They formally replied, for my peace of mind, but with an engine still sounding a bit rough, it still annoyed me.
My car had 0w40 on its first oil change at 2000km. 5w30 in the next oil change, coincidentally the ticking started. 0w30 was used the next oil change and that didn’t resolve anything. Now, at 45000km, I performed an oil change myself… 0w40 Castrol was used and (also https://www.wynns.eu/product/hydraul...ter-treatment/) within a few days that permanent ticking sound (with a cold engine) went from something intermittent to a thing of the past. I thought small differences in oil grade wouldn’t make much of a difference, but I stand corrected, the engine sounds a lot smoother… seriously, try an oil change and check the oil grade first before thinking the worst. (It is not the first time I cheered after an oil change, but this time, I waited for at least a month before reporting back. ) |

DI system
I had a subaru DI engine, and it is the same way. It is probably an issue that would require hearing the sound in person. It basically had to do with the octane rating and fuel quality. Apparently the folks in japan do not have the issue and the parts on the DI system are the same as the US spec.

Just to update this thread and offer my thanks to the forum....
Also have just had a 2016 M3 with 22,000km/13,670mi have the clicking noise. Very similar noise and result to original post by dzu. In short - BMW service said the valve train was misaligned and significant amounts of swarf was found in the oil filter. They stepped up and said they would replace the engine. Engine in process of being replaced. estimate 3 weeks. Thanks for the info, |
