Wow !! Call me naive but I didn't realize this stuff happens either. At least not around here, maybe south LA or something.

Was your car parked on the street overnight or were you just out for errands or dinner?? Busy street or side street? They leave your car up on blocks ?

Nuts..

Only have street parking , so it's always there unfortunately. It's a generally very safe neighborhood - or so I thought.

I have a really nervous task of bringing the car from the PC in Greenville to our home in Madison, WI on summer tires. I have already ordered the snows, didn't ship them to SC because the delivery date got moved up, and it's like 50F and sunny here. But now I see there is a snow storm heading mostly to the west this weekend , that's when we will be driving back. It will get some wet snow possibilities to our route. Worse case I plan to pull over or stay overnight somewhere if the roads get snowy. But right now, the plan is to drive to Cinci from Greenville (Friday), then drive to Madison via Indianapolis/Chicago next day (Saturday)

Fingers crossed I don't wreck it or end up in a snow strom stuck on my summer tires.

First time

This season will be the first time I am swapping wheels myself. I have the floor jack, adapter, breaker bar, sleeved socket and torque wrench.

My question is about jacking safety.

Assuming I am jacking up one corner, swapping, dropping back down and jacking up another corner until I am finished, do I need to use a jack stand for safety sake? I've read if a floor jack fails, you are screwed as your car drops on the rotor suspension, etc. If that's best practice, where to I place the jack stand assuming I have the floor jack at the jack point holding up the corner of the car? Thanks!

We (BMW of Sudbury) had 3 sets of rims stolen (750xi, E92 M3, Toyota Avalon). Imagine that? In Sudbury lol we now install wheel locks on every car and installed night vision cameras as a precaution.

I don't use a jack stand unless I'm going under the car, or if elevated for an extended period. Also if your jack has enough lift, you can get high enough on the front jack point, to change both wheels on one side. Don't forget to loosen the lugs before you jack it up.

Too bad they didn't put locks on mine before my delivery. . I kid, I kid.

Also - an Avalon? That's a strange choice.

yea you only need them for safety if the car can crush you.....seen a dude killed by scissor jack.......hydro jacks don't usually have a catastrophic failure but are known to leak

Wow.. like you said, wouldnt expect that in Sudbury.I'm surprised they don't steal rims off the lot in some neighborhoods.

While I would be careful, I certainly wouldn't freak out about it unless there is pure ice on the road and the temps are below freezing. If it snows but the daytime temps go back above freezing, you will be okay if you take it slow. Here is a photo of what I drove through on my ED out of Davos on summer tires.

Car did fine, the tires did fine.. I just drove carefully and never felt like the car was undriveable.

Thanks for that. I got back to Madison around 5PM yesterday. Temps were below freezing at some points, but no rain or snow. So made it fine. Well...except for the stupid windshield chip I got near Chicago on the toll-road. Even after keeping safe distance from other cars, don't even know where it came from, as there wasnt even an SUV nearby. Oh well...shit happens at least it didn't crack considering how loud the noise was.

Thanks again for the post, ED/PCD were both a ton of fun! This forum has been so much help.

Now I am just waiting for my snow tires/rims to arrive from tirerack. Ordered two weeks ago, but they were out of stock on the rims, currently states will be in stock on the 25th. Hopefully I will have them after thanks giving.

Cheers!

Thanks! They do, but my current carrier Geico the deductible is the comprehensive deductible , that's $500 in my case. But I heard some companies have lower deductible just for glass. Not sure if it's state specific either.

Did the rates ever change when you replaced 4 windshields ?

That's because glass replacement in MA with no deductible is standard.
